About the Author

Sam Murphy is one of the United Kingdom's leading fitness and health experts, contributing to Health and Fitness, Healthy Living, and Financial Times. She is the author of five books, including Run for Life, which has been published in 10 languages.

Murphy is a training consultant to the London Marathon, Nike, and Adidas. She is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences on fitness and health. With over 17 years of experience as a runner, Murphy has raced distances from 3,000 meters to 100 miles and is a 14-time marathon runner.

Murphy lives in Clapton, London, and enjoys running, walking, and camping.

Sarah Connors is a physiotherapist who specializes in running injuries. She is the physiotherapist for the British athletics team. Connors has worked with British athletes since 1993 and attended two Olympic Games. She has been a competitive runner since the age of 11.

Connors is married with three children and enjoys running, skiing, and spending time with her kids.

running better now?

An easy read, covers most aspects needed whether you're starting out, or training for a marathon. Good section on injuries including how to get back into it after being injured or sick. Doesn't include a training plan for a marathon/half marathon but guides you into how to make your own. Maybe could of had more on this. Good nutrition section-more than just your regular eat this, drink fluids.. Good research basis for what they say. Talks about which types of cross training are good and relate to running. Much easier to read and includes a broad wealth of information relating to running compared to some other books I've read.

Great book. Great design. I bought this for my wife who wants to train for a half marathon, but hasn't run much previously. Running Well should ensure both her success and safety. Very accessible and informative!

A running resource that is a must for beginners to intermediate runners

I swear I didn't know this book was on the Oprah Book Club list until after I read it. It is an extremely good resource for the novice to intermediate runner. It covers all facets of keeping your body safe when running, hence the name, in a manner that makes you want to run with confidence. The authors illustrate stretches and strengthening techniques that are easy and work exceptionally well. Additionally, the troubleshooting pain sections are an incredible wealth of knowledge that assist greatly in isolating the cause of an injury and how to heal, recovery, and rebuild from the injury. I strained my Achilles and thought that I would be out of running for at least a month. Nope. I followed the book and was back running, without pain, in 7 days. Available now at your local library. I actually had to buy this book...Yes, Oprah is right.

About the Author

Gene Helfman is a professor emeritus at the Odum School of Ecology's Program in Conservation Ecology and Sustainable Development, University of Georgia. He is co-author of Fishes: The Animal Answer Guide, also published by Johns Hopkins. George H. A One Stop Scientific Resource

Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide is a thoroughly presented, exhaustively researched, one-stop information guide for any question a person may ever have about sharks. This isn't a light and airy book for kids that talks down to them about the animal with bright images and graphics; rather, this is intended as a reference and resource for all ages to seriously address the shark species and have at fingertips everything that is currently known about the animal. The book is text heavy interspersed with B&W images as needed.

The book is broken down by type of question. Section 1 one answers general questions about sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras. Section 2 is full of questions about form and functions of sharks. Section 3 is about shark colors. Section 4 is for shark behavior questions. Section 5 is about ecology. Section 6 is reproduction and development. Section 7 is about shark food and feeding. Section 8 is about sharks and their interactions with humans. Section 9 is about shark problems. And section 10 is about human problems in how they deal with sharks.

The authors clearly have a great love for the animal and that comes through in the exhaustively researched knowledge of sharks. This is a great book for the budding marine biologist or older child either afraid of or fascinated by sharks to help them understand the animal and take it out of the realm of superstition or legend. As well, I enjoyed sharing several of the questions with my daughter to get her thinking about sea animals and to understand the species. This is also a great book for anyone fascinated by sharks and wanting to know more as well.

The afterward by the authors really explain the motivation to write the book as well as its usefulness: "Together, we have reflected on how great it would have been to have found a book such as this one when our fascination with sharks was new."

My kudos to the authors for a fascinating reference book long overdue. Received as an ARC from the publisher.

For those of us who grew up with Jaws as our introduction to sharks, this book will make you want to go out in the water again. It's full of colorful, pedestrian friendly scientific elements for the armchair naturalist, scientist or inquisitive mind of any age. Some fascinating random facts will show how sharks influenced competitive swimsuit design, what wetsuits are least attractive to sharks, and how to improve your keel design next time you design the next Americ'a Cup. Sorry New Zealand - you didn't get the Cup this year, but you still have some amazing sharks in your waters! And Dr. Gene will guide you through every part of this amazing creature.

Very interesting and unique book

I for one have never read a book so in detail about palmistry and therefore decided to try it, I've always thought as palm reading something gimmicky or a way to exploit people for some money however this books method on how to read palms is actually not as straight forward as that and I think it's quite amazing actually, I have yet to fully read it but just flicking through shows the authors attention to detail with consistent grammar and hardly any punctuation/spelling mistakes.

It's 5/5 from me.

Disappointed fan

Much as it pains me to say it, as a long-time reader and fan of Umair Haque's excellent HBR blog, I was left slightly disappointed by this book.

For all its good content (including a great foreword by Gary Hamel), it fell short of what I was expecting and hoping for - namely, Umair using the extended medium of a book to take his basic thesis to the next level and tackle some of the (IMNSHO deeply misguided) critics of his blog, who prefer to spend their time demanding 'linear' proof of causality, rather than appreciating the complex system of changing frame conditions in which business is now operating.

Umair's cause isn't helped by some extraordinarily poor editing, which sees not only key ideas and concepts, but occasionally entire paragraphs of text repeated verbatim on facing pages. As a result (rightly or wrongly), you're left with the impression of a book that achieves its 200-odd page count with unnecessary padding, rather than with the further development of his argument.

Ultimately, I have to agree with the essence of Philip Loden's review. If you want the benefit of Umair's thought-provoking perspectives, go visit his blog. If you want to get to grips with the why, the what and the how of creating "thick" (sustainable, shared) value in more detail, then I feel there are other, better books for the job - Jonathon Porritt's "Capitalism As If The World Matters" and the magnificent Ray C. Anderson's "Business Lessons From A Radical Industrialist" to name but two.

Frustratingly superficial

If you need to be told that our current corporate system is broken, that the world can afford less and less to ignore negative externalities, that radical innovation can disrupt an industry, that feedback loops based on customer input can dramatically improve the way you do business, and that taking pride in who you are and what you do can produce better outcomes than making quarterly earnings the measure of all things, then read this book. If you already believe these things, have actually heard of the Innovator's Dilemma, and instead are looking for ways to implement these principles or detailed case studies of companies that already have, then keep looking.

A radical overhaul of business strategy

Growth in developed countries has been steadily slowing for the last half-century, and this is a lasting, historic shift more significant than a crisis, correction or crash, according to Umair Haque in this book. The global poor have been subsidizing the rich to fuel overconsumption, and the natural world, communities and society have been marginalized.

The problem is that under industrial-era practices, businesses have been able to extract what the author calls "thin value" profits by shifting costs onto someone else. The new types of enterprises which will thrive in the 21st century will be "constructive capitalists", which will do some or all of the following:

* Renew resources instead of exploiting them
* Be more responsive to supply and demand by allocating resources democratically
* Use "philosophies" that create value rather than "strategies" that extract value
* Creating new arenas of competition rather than dominating existing ones
* Seeking payoffs that are meaningful in human terms, not just financial ones

The book goes on to describe ways in which some companies are already making the shift. Walmart has taken on challenging new sustainability goals. Nike has adopted new design principles to reduce waste and maximize recycling. Lego has opened up the design of its products to users. Google aims to stay competitive by liberating data instead of trying to lock users in. Tata has created an entirely new category of car with its Nano, and Apple has done similar things with its products. Nintendo's Wii is turning video games into a focal point for social interaction.

The book is written in a bold, provocative style similar to that of Gary Hamel (who has written the Foreword). The author aims more to challenge you out of your complacency than to get you to agree with him. He challenges you to use the book not as a blueprint but as inspiration for creating your own blueprint for the future of your business.

I found the author's ideas quite stimulating, although I am not sure that it is possible to build a business using all of the features of "constructive capitalism". For example, most people did not see the need for an iPad before Apple created one, so I do not think that "allocating resources democratically" is entirely consistent with "creating new arenas of competition". In the Kindle version of the book, some of the figures are almost illegible, although this does not detract from the value of the book as a whole. I disagreed with much of what the book says in its predictions for the future, but I believe that it is partly right; the problem is, I do not know which parts.

A must have for any child who loves Thomas the Tank Engine.

This book contains some great stories about Thomas the Tank Engine, and all of his friends including Percy, Henry, Gordon, Anabel, Clara, James, Bertie, and many more.
Prior to buying this, we have purchased many Thomas books for our son, most of which wear out or get destroyed very quickly as small paperback books do. This book is the perfect solution, it has ALL of the Thomas stories in it, it has a good strong cover, and it will last for a while.
My 3 year old son loves this book, it is one of his favorite bedtime books. The stories are a good length to read 1 or 2 of them at bedtime.

Not the best Thomas book, but lots of stories

My son is a huge Thomas fan, and had be read him "Thomas the Tank Engine's Big Blue Treasury" every night for weeks. Hoping to get some variety, I got this giant book of all the Thomas stories written by W. Awdry (the Big Blue Treasury has 3 stories written by his son, Christopher Awdry). Compared to the son's stories, these are often violent and not really appropriate for some small children. The theme of at least half the stories is that a train is either rude or vain and then gets his punishment (either from an event, or from the teasing or revenge of the other characters). My wife won't read the stories, and I find myself doing some verbal editing of the stories whenever I see the very common story element of the other trains/trucks/coaches deciding to "pay him out" (i.e. paybacks, revenge - a phrase which seems to pop up in about a third of the stories). A couple of stories have rude trucks, which are then destroyed. If your kids watch a lot of the videos, however, you should be familar with many of the stories, as they are the basis for a lot of the videos. The book has good value in that there is a LOT of stories (I got that variety I was looking for), however to make them fit they have reduced the illustrations to a VERY small size that I find too small to do the stories justice. Also, the stories cover several decades, and I felt there was a decline in the quality of the stories as the book comes to an end. I would rather have this one than trying to collect all the individual books, however. In short, I don't think this is as good as either the Big Blue Treasury or the Big Yellow Treasury, both of which have stories better suited to small children and much bigger and brighter illustrations, and my son likes both of those books better also. This is still a good book for a Thomas fan, however, and a nice change after you have read those books a hundred times (and even if you decide to skip a few of the darker stories, it is still a good value) and it tracks many of the stories in the videos.

A great investment!

We bought this book a year ago, and my son still enjoys listening to the stories. He has heard each at least three times, some of them many more times besides. As his mother, who has read through the book with him twice myself, *I* love the stories, too! They teach good lessons and are very entertaining at the same time.
It actually is not true that all Thomas stories are in this book. All the original stories by the original author are, but more stories have been made up by less skilled story writers, in my opinion. The BEST Thomas stories are the ones in this book.
The shorter story books have been Americanized, and I think that makes them lose some of their appeal. For instance, the Fat Controller in this book has been renamed in the shorter books and videos to his proper name, "Sir Topham Hatt." Political correctness meets Thomas the Tank Engine. In my opinion, they were better unchanged, and that is what you have in this book.
If you have a toddler, I highly recommend this book. One word of warning, though. Then come the Thomas train sets, and the videos . . . you will never be through with Thomas once you start!
