Valerie Ann Worwood is internationally acknowledged as one of the world's leading aromatherapists and is the author of the bestselling The Fragrant Pharmacy, The Fragrant Mind and The Fragrant Heavens. Fantastic Book -- Love Valerie Worwood's others too...Just one issue

I have The Fragrant Mind, The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, and The Fragrant Heavens (Also Essential Aromatherapy, with Susan Worwood.) These books are fascinating and encyclopedic, going into more depth about aromatherapy than I've ever seen anywhere. They are very readable and entertaining as well. I am making some combinations using this book as a reference and noticing great effects already...plus, my home smells wonderful. (I've just started combining geranium, grapefruit, orange, pine, patchouli and cedarwood. It's a divine combo!)

I have just one issue, which I hate to bring up, since I'm an ardent fan of both aromatherapy and Valerie Worwood's books.... CATS (and some other animals as well) are particularly sensitive to essential oils, and I'd recommend you research this on your own and use aromatherapy with caution around cats. Cats are lacking some of the enzymes needed to metabolize the terpenes and phenols in essential oils and some have even been poisoned, while others seem not to be bothered. Oils like pine, cinnamon, citrus oils and others can be toxic to our feline friends.

I was not happy to learn this but I love my cats, so it's better to know. I still use the essential oils, but I just make sure to ventilate the area, keep some parts of my home scent-free (dang) and watch the cats closely. I also don't run the diffuser nonstop as I did before, and I'm using other methods of application (being careful not to pet the cats after touching the oils.) The fact that cats sleep a lot doesn't exactly make it easy to tell what's going on with them...

I did not see this mentioned in the books, although it may be somewhere. It hasn't been widely known, and it's only logical that one would want to scent areas near the litterbox, etc. I have probably been guilty of sickening my own cats with well-intended immune oil applications in the past.

Just thought you cat lovers would want to know this. I don't have other pets like dogs but I think there is some sensitivity there too. Just research it; there's a lot of info online.

Valerie's book gets 5 stars anyway. It's a fantastic reference, and I think the oils can probably be used safely around cats if you're careful and aware of potential issues.

Worth the read

For the most part, this is wonderful resource, packed with information. Sometimes, it seems as if the author is including too much detail on things that are not actually mainstream to her point, but ancillary supporting details. When that happens, I occasionally get confused about what this has to do with Aromatherapy. However, the point eventually circles back to the topic.

On the positive side, as much of this book is, the author is very thorough and quite clear about the application of essential oils to mental and emotional well-being, and there is no other book that covers the topic in such depth. Also, more complex concepts are explored from different perspectives, in order to deepen the reader's understanding.

I would recommend this as a resource for any Aromatherapist professional.

My favorite Aromatherapy book

This may be the one Aromatherapy/Essential Oil book that is my favorite. The emotional needs of an Essential Oil (EO) user are very important as that is where the smell triggers us. Thus this book not only lists but explains the factors that go into the reasons behind why EOs work. VERY informative, very easy to understand w/o being talked down to, not too scientific either, nor too "airy fairy."Just right in my opinion.Recommend!

About the Author
Patti J. Marinelli has had a distinguished career teaching Spanish at the University of South Carolina. The recipient of many university awards, she also was named Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers' Association in 2008. She has extensive experience coordinating the introductory Spanish program and mentoring graduate teaching assistants at the university. Marinelli has authored two other Spanish textbooks, including the best-selling high beginner textbook Puentes. Both her teaching and writing are informed by her experiences as a certified ACTFL OPI tester and her expertise in standards-based instruction.

Karin Fajardo is an educational publishing professional who has authored language learning materials for over a dozen Spanish textbooks across all levels. As a native Spanish speaker who has lived in and traveled extensively throughout Spain and Latin America, her primary focus has been to generate culturally rich interdisciplinary language lessons. A great book!

A must have if you are taking online Spanish classes. I used this book in my final semester of undergrad and it was incredibly helpful. With the use of the connect online feature and the book materials you will be fully fluent in a matter of two months as long as you practice and stick to it.

This is not for students - don't buy!

This was a teacher's manual, not the actual book students are required to have. My son had to buy a new one at the USC bookstore when he started the semester.

Essential; but certainly not "Exhaustive" (as C. Wolff would have it)

Neal Zaslaw is well known in the musicology field as a Mozart scholar who often concerns himself with wind instruments. Accordingly, this book is written with a certain level of musical knowledge required. If you are a casual music lover, this is perhaps not the best book for you.

The book looks at all known Mozart symphonies, including those which cannot be authenticated, in chronological order, discussing details of Mozart's life; the circumstances in which the symphony was written; the purpose the symphony was written; some musical choices to be made in performance; form and musical topic; and other items of interest.

The analysis is certainly enlightening and worthwhile, but hardly "exhaustive" as Christopher Wolff claims on the back cover. Perhaps his review tells more of the limits of Mr. Wolff's study of Mozart than it does of the book itself. Such a comment leads me to believe that Wolff has not painstakingly looked at the symphonies of Mozart in great detail. Although, if he is correct, perhaps all of us should just read this book and stop studying Mozart on our own?

Zaslaw frequently refers to the thoughts of other scholars such as de Saint-Foix and Einstein, and in doing so sometimes commits the same cardinal sin that de Saint Foix does - making an assertion with no supporting discussion nor clarity of definition. For example, on p. 237, Zaslaw wrote: "The Finale [of K132] is as French as Mozart's symphonic music ever becomes." Without knowledge of the French style, this is useless. With knowledge of the French style, it is up to the reader to go and convince her/himself what Zaslaw meant by this. Fortunately this type of unexplained assertion doesn't occur often, and there are fairly good discussions of Italian and Viennese styles in the book. Discussion of French national style is more dispersed throughout and less complete.

As in any scholarly book, there are the token archaic latin words and some others which require a dictionary handy, but overall, the vocabulary is not too heavy, and the book reads quickly. I was annoyed, however, when on p. 379 I was driven to my dictionaries to look up the word "punctilious," only to find that the word had been used incorrectly and it should have been "punctual." If you're going to force me to look words up, please use the words correctly! And where was the editor? Come on, I paid $65 for this! (I notice Amazon has raised the price to $95...hmmm...)

I am also sad that in Chapter 11, Zaslaw abandons the form and topical analysis he had done earlier. However, Chapter 13 is definitely a wonderful climax - a look at the meaning of the "Jupiter" symphony. Although everyone knows, and Zaslaw admits, we can never really know what a non-programmatic symphony means unless the composer tells us, this is certainly a fascinating look supported with facts.

All in all, a must have for those interested in Mozart or the Symphony genre in general. Much better than de Saint-Foix!

Scholarly and detailed

This was worth the full price for the indexes alone. Zaslaw gives a detailed chart of every orchestra Mozart ever conducted, so you can see the exact ensembles he worked with. Lots of fact-packed chapters on many things in addition to the symphonies. Clear proof of which works are not really by Mozart, and why we thought they were.

Mozart and the Art of Changing a Gear Box

This is not a cheap acquisition by any means and I'm not sure it is worth the price.

Zaslaw is no mean academic and his scholarship cannot be impugned easily. Everything you wanted to know about the nuts and bolts of Mozart's symphonies is here in clear, precise language. His approach is systematic and thorough. The real tour de force here is Zaslaw's demolition of K 16a, the so-called Odense Symphony in A Minor. The incipit was known from an old Breitkopf and Hartel catalogue - and it was attributed to Mozart in the same publication. The symphony went missing for nearly two centuries, only to surface in the early 1980s. It was trumpeted as being from the hands of the (young) Master. With greater patience and acuity, Zaslaw compares its tonal structure with Mozart's three bona fide symphonies in a minor key - K 111, K 183 & K 550. The conclusion is inescapable: fine work as it is, it was not written by Wolfgang. Game over.

The main weakness of this book is simple: it's as dry as dust. It could almost be a car-manual. Sure, the Saint-Fox alternative from the 1930s has more orchids to its name than the Chelsea Flower Show but at least it attempts to fathom out the significance of these works. In contrast, HC Robbins Landon magisterially walks the line between facts and meaning in his Haydn at Eszterhaza, 1766-1790 (Haydn : Chronicle and Works); he need not fear the advent of new scholarship as he is operating in a different dynamic. Likewise, Einstein might be outdated on scholarly grounds but he continues to illuminate Mozart in a way that Zaslaw abjectly fails to do so (Mozart: His Character, His Work (Galaxy Books)). Maynard Solomon gleefully submits Mozart to the Freudian sausage-machine but again, one walks away with new insights - and he writes so well (Mozart: A Life).

One does not want egotism to intrude in works such as this; even so, all I can predicate of Zaslaw from this tome is that he probably has a beard and a snappy dresser he ain't. That's how depersonalised and dessicated this survey is.

So yes - tick, this is useful enough even if it will not leave you aglow and afire with love of Mozart.

About the Author

I was a library brat. My first Library was run by British pensioners; wrinkle faced expatriate grandmothers who made my membership seem a sacred rite, each step dutifully performed in hushed whispers and fleeting smiles. To this day, I have never met a pensioner i couldn't sneak a smile out of and I have met a few battle axes believe me. My mother is also a voracious reader, so our home growing up was either church mouse quiet with every one reading or riotous with song and dance with everyone sharing.
I discovered in words a tireless magic. They have the power to create weightless-tranquil spaces that capture the intangible, the haunting; in their purest form they prove the unknowable, the uniquely personal and make it universal. Moments in sport have also given me similar timeless spaces; a sudden stillness, a breathless slow motion of everything around me - an opportunity to do or learn something magical and heroic. Silent words and poetry are the lips through which my soul shares a smile.

"This is a very well-written book, and a worthwhile read for all but the most advanced Qt programmers. Good, if outdated, introduction to Qt

Book starts out strong, and was helpful as an introduction for Qt. However, it seems to cut out about 350 pages in, putting subjects such as "Focus Handling" in its own 3 page chapter, rather than integrating it into an existing chapter. That said, the Portability chapter, which includes a list of Qt functions that are not portable, was a valuable addition.

Keep in mind, the 2nd edition of Programming for Qt was written for Qt 3. At the time of this review, the latest version of Qt is version 4. This is a problem because Trolltech appears to reinvent the wheel for each major version. While the author had me salivating at the thought of a QStyleSheet, checking the API docs for Qt 4 QStyleSheet is now a deprecated class, and as far as I can tell there is no current equivalent.

One aspect I wish the author had covered in more detail is the actual compiling and linking of applications that use Qt. I'm starting to get the impression that Trolltech's dirty little secret is that while their API is both clean and thorough, the signal/slot method is overly reliant on #defines, and the developer has to compile and link as many as twice the number of files to make it function. Trolltech includes a program 'qmake' almost as a bandaid which will generate Makefiles that will then automatically generate and compile the extra 'moc' files. The problem is that if you're porting an application to Qt, you're likely to have existing makefiles. Adding the additional layer of qmake and it's .pro files is both cumbersome and not actually necessary. While you can certainly figure out on your own how to avoid using qmake, it would have been helpful if the book described the functionality of the qmake-generated makefiles. This would help developers porting to Qt to include that functionality in their existing makefiles.

Needs more depth

I found this book to be clearly written, and not difficult to follow and succinct, and not sufficient to answer enough of my programming questions to feel comfortable creating my own programs. You definitely need to study the Troll Tech-provided documentation to go very far beyond the book in programming, but the documentation reads like it was written as a reference, for people who understand but simply need a reminder. The book needs about two hundred more pages explaining examples and critical subjects like slot-signal interactions, layouts and many of the widgets more completely.
This book makes a good overview, but needs more depth. At the time, it was about the only book available, so I cannot say that it was a mistake to get the book when I did. I hope that other books coming out on Qt have more depth and more complete explanations.

Still a useful learning tool.

If you want to learn Qt, you'd better start with Qt4. This book is really for Qt3, but it's still full of useful examples and information. In order to get the code in this book to work, you should #include at the top of your code, and then add "CONFIG = release", "CONFIG += qt", and "QT += qt3support" to your *.pro project file. After that was done, I had no problems with the code from this book.

Amazing and inspiring book

This is my first review for a book I've ever done. I'm not even done with this book (on Ch7) and I had to come write and review. I just wanted to start off and say we take our life's for granted sometimes. Eric story is very touching and inspiring about what he went though in his life to his uprising. I first noticed Eric from this youtube video Secrets to Success [...] which has almost 1 million views (between the first two parts) I'm sure others have seen this as well. It was not until recently I started watching his TGIM (Thank God it's Monday) and TGIM (Thank God I'm Married) video series. Great motivation jump start to your Mondays and your marriage!

The book first starts off with what happen in his life at a young age and then talks about how he gain his motivation get get past his circumstances. There are principle points throughout the book starting on Ch 4 which are very great as well. Each principle have a story about Eric's life that relates to each one. (Some of these will relate to your life) This is a must read for anyone and everyone regardless of your circumstances. It will give you motivation and make you rethink your choices in life for success.

Again, I'm only on Ch7 so far, and I will leave a longer review once I finish this book. I'll tell you one thing...this is the first book I have ever read Ch 1 - 7 in little over an hour without stopping.

First Book I Have Ever Read

I come from a generation where you pick up a video game controller before a book. Throughout school and college I skimmed books and read cliff notes. After watching some of E.T's videos I decided I wanted to read his book. I had tried to read books before but i couldn't focus long enough to complete them. I read E.T's book in one week. He wrote in a way I could understand. A way that was real to me. ET is very inspirational and a person making a real difference.

I read this book a few weeks back and just now had time to get to writing up a review. I have followed Eric Thomas for the last year watching and absorbing all his motivation via his YouTube channel. I am a fan of the TGIM feeding off his energy and enthusiasm for life.

I found a whole new level of profound respect for this leader while listening to his mixtape. I listen to his mixtape at least once a week when I head out for my training runs. A few of his speeches give me goosebumps.

It only made sense for me to read his book. I wanted to read about his journey and take away some key things that I can bring to my job as a teacher and a coach.

I found the book to be an easy read, but one that allowed me to take away some key passages. I have shared my Kindle notes below in case you don't have access to a Kindle. If you do have a Kindle, then feel free to check out my notes yourself.

I found the book to be good. I took away many good things. I don't know that any of it was new to me, but the way it was presented allowed for me to reflect and rethink some key ideas that I have not thought about in a while.

If you need a boost of motivation or need an example of someone making it from nothing, then you must follow Eric Thomas by reading his book, following his tweets, and watching his YouTube channel. This book is just one more weapon is his tool chest to spread his word.

You can tell by all my notes(check Kindle Notes) that I enjoyed the book. I highlighted 55 passages so that is telling you that you need to read this book.

I did have one issue and that was with the Kindle format. The format was not fluid. Some pages only had one letter. There were simple spelling and grammar errors. This was an issue with the content of the book, but the format. It drove me crazy and did screw with the flow. I don't like interruptions and this bothered me from time to time.

Overall, this is a good read worth your time. It will not blow your mind, but the book will give an insight into where Eric came from. It you want to have your mind blown, then check out everything he offers online.
