About the Author

Bill Richardson is a two-term governor of New Mexico, former US ambassador to the UN, and former secretary of the Department of Energy. He spent 15 years in Congress and has successfully won the release of hostages, American servicemen, and prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, Cuba, and Sudan.
Kevin Bleyer was an Emmy Award–winning writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and author of Me the People: One Man's Quest to Rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America.

Refreshing & Fascinating

How refreshing to read a book written by a bonafide politician with humility and humor - especially at this time when the government is shutdown! I read this book in 2 days and couldn't put it down. Richardson (with the masterful help of Kevin Bleyer's entertaining and skilled writing) outlines career failures and successes negotiating with all the "bad guys" of the world from Saddam Hussein to the Kim's of North Korea. Although written as a sort of manual on negotiating, I found the personal insider stories of his meetings to be utterly fascinating. I'll definitely be recommending this book to friends, colleagues and family.

Quite interesting read; lots of back stories about people in the real world, including world leaders or world-notorious bad guys ;-)
Can indirectly teach you some nice basic rules on negotiation too.

A jargon-filled history lesson

A bit narcissistic throughout, this book offers very minimal lessons to be learned. In between history lessons and Bill tooting his own horn (way too often) there is hardly any substance or negotiation lessons to be absorbed. Unfortunately the title of this book may sway some to purchase it (the title is creative), however it acts more as a pat on the back for Bill's accolades. Do not buy if you want to learn negotiating strategies because you'll walk away learning none. If you simply just want a history lesson on USA/Cuba relations and other countries like Sudan and Iraq, go for it.

Here's a quote from his book describing his relationship with Fidel Castro:
“Which is why I’m willing to say, or rather, to admit: Fidel Castro and I have a lot in common. Of course I realize that American politicians don’t win many elections if they go around saying, “You know something? Fidel Castro and I have a lot in common.” But the fact remains: Fidel Castro and I have a lot in common.”

This example sums it up. Filled with high praise regarding himself and his relationships with other politicians, "How to Sweet-Talk a Shark" leaves you wondering if you wasted your time.

The late Henry (he recently died of a heart attack) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning culture critic for Time and a self-described white, Yale-educated, suburban, registered Democrat. One guesses he spent his youth being a liberal but, judging from this book, became another neoconservative in middle age because of the excesses of affirmative action, feminism, multiculturalism, etc. What the United States needs now, argues Henry, is elitism, which he never defines but which seems to mean a social system that rewards only competence, not skin color, gender, disability, etc. Henry never seems to appreciate fully how much talent was going unrewarded before affirmative action, feminism, etc., or that any human activity, no matter how worthy, is liable to silly or dangerous excesses. Unfortunately, this book may attract the attention of reactionaries like Henry, so academic and public libraries should consider it for purchase.

A liberal tries to straddle the fence, in a harsh, often trite polemic geared to enrage multiculturalists, feminists, affirmative activists, and others. Even liberals who secretly harbor doubts about whether a lack of ethnic pride is what underlies the difficulties of black children in school will find little succor from Henry (a Pulitzer Prize winner and a columnist for Time who died this summer at the age of 44). Even those who criticize the belief that all values and ideas are equally worthy will be offended by his writing, regarding the relative worth of cultures, ``It is scarcely the same thing to put a man on the moon as to put a bone in your nose.'' In defending elitism as an individualist philosophy that demands the best from each person and rewards those with the greatest achievements, Henry slaughters every sacred cow of the left. Affirmative action, he claims, is as unfair to its beneficiaries as it is to white men, breeding doubt in minority employees whether they were hired for their abilities or to fill a quota. As for feminism, ``forty-six percent of the nation's financial managers are women,'' so what are they still griping about, he wonders. Educated mothers should stay home: ``A live-in nanny clearly represents an intellectual step down for the child,'' since she is probably not college-educated. (But even card-carrying feminists will relish his quotes from some rather laughable scholarly feminist works, for instance, one about the impact of ``masculinism'' on the study of geography.) The gaps in Henry's logic are often glaring. He believes in equality of opportunity rather than equality of outcome, but he wants less academically successful students to be tracked into vocational education at an early age. And in espousing Oregon's health-care reform package--which even the Bush administration rejected as discriminatory against the disabled--on the grounds that some lives are more valuable to society than others, Henry begs the whole question of the worth of human life. An infuriating screed that will alienate even those liberals seeking a coherent and well-argued defense of intellectual rigor and reward for merit. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Even more relevant today

It’s been twenty-plus years since this book was written, and each of Henry’s examples could easily be updated with current (and more extreme) examples of the American leveling phenomenon. He suggests that this trend began after WWII, but one can look back to the early 1800’s when Alexis de Tocqueville identified extreme egalitarianism as the overarching ethos explaining much of the American character.

Consider these observations from Vol. 1 of Democracy in America:

“There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality that incites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom. Not that those nations whose social condition is democratic naturally despise liberty; on the contrary, they have an instinctive love of it. But liberty is not the chief and constant object of their desires; equality is their idol: they make rapid and sudden efforts to obtain liberty and, if they miss their aim, resign themselves to their disappointment; but nothing can satisfy them without equality, and they would rather perish than lose it.“

…And from Vol. II:

“Political liberty bestows exalted pleasures from time to time upon a certain number of citizens. Equality every day confers a number of small enjoyments on every man. The charms of equality are every instant felt and are within the reach of all; the noblest hearts are not insensible to them, and the most vulgar souls exult in them. The passion that equality creates must therefore be at once strong and general. Men cannot enjoy political liberty unpurchased by some sacrifices, and they never obtain it without great exertions. But the pleasures of equality are self-proffered; each of the petty incidents of life seems to occasion them, and in order to taste them, nothing is required but to live."

"I think that democratic communities have a natural taste for freedom; left to themselves, they will seek it, cherish it, and view any privation of it with regret. But for equality their passion is ardent, insatiable, incessant, invincible; they call for equality in freedom; and if they cannot obtain that, they still call for equality in slavery. They will endure poverty, servitude, barbarism, but they will not endure aristocracy."

"This is true at all times, and especially in our own day. All men and all powers seeking to cope with this irresistible passion will be overthrown and destroyed by it. In our age freedom cannot be established without it, and despotism itself cannot reign without its support.”

In Defense of Elitism is a thoughtful and engaging reflection on what may be the inevitable development of democratic egalitarianism.

In defense of common sense

I don't know a single person that doesn't wonder and even worry WHY there is such variation among life outcomes, particularly economic. This is the book for you. Perhaps not because of it's style, assertions or recommendations, but because it will really cause you to think and investigate deeper into this most important topic.

I mention economic because there is general comfort with those who succeed in music, entertainment, art, athletics, literature and even ideas. We rarely begrudge their success or somehow believe it was ill-gotten or at the expense of others. But when it comes to economic success, it is altogether different. Society in general seems to be enraged despite the overwhelming evidence that the competition to succeed economically is by and large no different than other walks of life. I find it very interesting how people praise the lottery winner in virtually every way but will find all manner of illegitimacy in wealth acquired through business endeavors. Perhaps it is because it is so much easier to recognize the elite in these other areas - we know when we see superior talent on stage or on the court. Henry's book will help you think much deeper in this area.

My only complaint about the book and it is perhaps a big one, is that Henry doesn't direct the reader to the mountain of other work and evidence that supports his claims. There is a wealth of information out there on this subject. So the book is largely narrative (as is this review, but I encourage you to use your search engine). If you come to reading it with a predisposition that supports his views you will like it, if you come with a view in opposition, Henry will likely not change your mind. But do your own research this book provokes.

Talent, drive, willingness to work very hard and take risk are attributes that simply are not uniformly distributed among people. And environment will not change that fact very much. And we all benefit from the successful. All these facts are contentious and may be hard to accept. The facts are neither good nor bad, they just are.

Surprisingly shocked to read a modern day Democrat speak out against the demeaning and degrading effects of egalitarianism that so many in his party have overlooked in the modern euphoria surrounding egalitarianism. While he is definitely more liberal than a conservative or libertarian, it is refreshing to know that elitists, that is those who believe in the allowing people to both succeed and fail a well as rise to the level they can and want to attain, have still existed in both major political parties even if their numbers have dwindled.

For a more libertarian view on the vanities of egalitarianism read Murray Rothbards essays in "Egalitarianism, a Revolt against Nature".

The one point that I remember disagreeing with William A Henry on was his support of establishing equality of opportunity. I believe in equality in terms of the law being applied as equally as possible, but equality of opportunity seems a dangerous slippery slope to advocate. Sure I want everyone to have opportunities and succeed, but when we as a society try to level the playing field for one little thing in order to try to create more equal opportunity, how do we know when to stop? It becomes a heap problem in philosophical terms: when does another grain of the sands of egalitarianism become a heap that really marks the promotion of equality of outcomes? I don't think Wiiliam a Henry argued against this danger. Yet he does argue strongly against egalitarianism and the resulting sickness of obsessing over equality of outcomes in all walks of life from workplace salaries and hiring practices to education and sports.

A New Classic of Gay YA

In a word, Cub was superb.

The vast majority of small-town gay young tales generally involve the city as the goal. In Cub, you won’t find the typical gay kid desperate to escape the farm for the bright lights of the city. Instead, you meet Travis: someone not at odds with his rural upbringing, a poet and a passionate young man who isn’t like any youth I’ve read in gay young adult literature before.

Travis is gay, yes, but he’s also worried that his unfulfilled penchant for kink might mean he’s on the path to becoming a sociopath. He’s burly and hairy and strong, not smooth and slim and toned. He longs to have power over others and yet terrified of never finding someone to protect. He’s angry, horny, frustrated and confused, and well aware that the world doesn’t want him the way he is.

In other words, he’s seventeen.

I can't praise the psychology of this book enough. There's such a visceral reality to the thoughts and feelings in Travis. Added to the layer of "otherness" all queer kids face is his yearning for the rough/tender world of BDSM, and his intensity is brilliantly handled. This is Mann at his finest, and the potential relationship that builds in Cub is deftly handled.

Lyrical and possessing that raw honesty, Cub should be the next gay young adult bestseller. Most importantly, with Travis, Mann has given a voice to youth who haven’t found themselves in the gay young adult books that have come before.

A touching story of young hirsute romance

Cub is a heartening and engaging novel of young homomasculine romance set in the bucolic hills of rural West Virginia. Seventeen-year-olds from opposite sides of the tracks, Travis and Mike start working out together in their senior year of high school and discover their mutual attraction for another.

As Travis comes to terms with being gay and Mike comes out as a bi man, the two affirm their love (and kinky lust) for another. Just as their relationship is solidifying, the two young men are confronted by the limitations of their individual options in life.

Cub is a moving, well-crafted story of young hirsute love, and is a must-read for Jeff Mann fans.

delightful and original book cover, plus a marvelous young adult story

Jeff Mann’s Cub is a charming young adult novel with Travis, a seventeen year old young man living in a West Virginia small town, as the irresistable main character. Travis is a long haired, large, bearded poet who loves living and working on his family’s farm. He considers himself a Wiccan nerd, and he dreams of leaving for West Virginia University the following year, where he plans to join a small group of lesbian friends. Travis knows he’s gay, but he doesn’t look like most of the smooth, thin gay men he sees in most trendy media. He’s also convinced he’s fat and unattractive, and he’s conflicted about his BDSM fantasies. He strikes up a friendship with Mike, another muscular, hairy and bearded seventeen year old who’s a high school drop-out working at a garage. Mike tells Travis that they are both “cubs,” or young “bears,” and that there’s a whole subculture of gay men who love men who look like them. Mike helps Travis to feel better about himself physically, and stands with him in the face of harsh bullying and bigotry. They embark on a year of exuberant teenage sexual exploration, and fall deeply in love.
Cub is such an unusual delight, and the cover art is absolutely priceless. Mann has written a book that young gay men who may feel they don’t “fit in” with popular gay culture can read and and enjoy. They now have a splendid story to read of two teenagers who learn that gay men, similar to all people regardless of their sexual orientation, don’t come in a “one size fits all” version. There are beefy, burly, muscular and delicious gay men who are just as attractive and desirable as smooth, thin men. Mann’s depiction of Travis as a oversexed teenager who is insecure, and impatient to leave his small town for college, is pitch perfect. Mann’s Travis is an awkward, teenage dreamer who discovers that while he may be a bit different, he’s not alone and he’s most certainly worthy of love.
My only grumble with this fine story is that I would like a glimpse into Travis and Mike’s futures beyond the single year covered in Cub. However, perhaps Jeff Mann knows best when he leaves their futures uncertain, because at only eighteen years old, Travis and Mike’s futures aren’t set in stone, and the possibilities are virtually limitless. Maybe Mann will someday write a sequel to Cub … and name it Bear! Ok … maybe I can’t name books, but I certainly can read them, and I adored reading Cub. I highly recommend Jeff Mann’s Cub – read it, and you will adore it too!
