This book is a must for the World War II collector

I recommend "Third Reich Collectibles" because it is a well thought out guide for the advanced collector, someone who is brand new to the hobby, or even a person who simply has an interest in Germany during this fascinating time period . The book is loaded with high quality, detailed color photographs of both common and rare items that a collector may encounter, along with period photos of some of these items being used or worn. It also gives realistic value ranges to aid in the often tricky business of buying, selling and trading German militaria. I especially like the way the author organized the chapters by the various military or political organizations. For me, this puts the items into their proper context. This helps the collector appreciate them more than if they were simply a badge or a flag. The historical background of each chapter is interesting and useful, and the organizations of pre-war and wartime Germany are so varied and diverse that few collectors or students of WWII history would not learn something worthwhile from this book. I highly recommend this book and believe those who are interested in this topic with spend hours reading and looking at all the terrific photos. I know I did.

The author has done a fantastic job putting together a well written impact-full book on "Third Reich" collectibles and history. The new format of the pictured items following right after the history of the organizations is so handy. It just flows seamlessly. Short and excellent explanation of the history of each organization. I highly recommend this book for all levels of collectors.

Chris William’s new book THIRD REICH COLLECTIBLES IDENTIFICATION & PRICE GUIDE provides the reader with not only a treasure trove of bright color artifact photos, but also an understandable explanation of the history of the NSDAP and its major organizations that existed during that dark period of history. Chris does an excellent job of breaking down the complex and often times overlapping organizations that existed during the Third Reich.
The valuation ranges that Chris provided for these artifacts were accurate, covered a wide array of items, and were in an easy to understand format. He included the more commonly encountered items as well as those rarely seen outside of advanced collections and museums. This pricing information is a great asset to those not familiar with the current collectibles market valuations for these types of items.
Another specific area, in which this book shines, is the inclusion of the memorabilia of many smaller Nazi groups and organizations, such as the Small Gardener Association, and the often misidentified Nazi Stenographers Guild. This information allows one to realize the level of pervasiveness of the Nazi regime into the everyday life of the German people and understand the power that their government held over its people.
I feel this book offers much to not only the novice collector, who will indeed benefit greatly from its concentrated information, but also to the advanced collector and student of history, due to the well researched content. Being a collector for over 35 years, I was still able to learn quite a bit about some of the more obscure and elusive Nazi German organizations. I know that this book will drive up interest by collectors in these often overlooked (and still affordable) secondary organizations.
My only criticism is I would have liked to see more of the period photographs captioned with what they represented.
I am happy to add this book to my own library and will certainly recommend it as a “must have” to the collectors who frequent my Military Collectibles Shop. I know it will encourage and excite a new generation of collectors to seek out and study these pieces of history. Happy Collecting!

About the Author

CHARLES G. HILL, JR., SC.D, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with over 200 peer-reviewed publications to his credit. In addition to his academic work, he has served as a consultant to government agencies and private corporations. Dr. Hill’s research has been highly interdisciplinary, including experience as a Fulbright Senior Scholar collaborating on studies of enzymatic reactions at the Institute for Catalysis and Petrochemistry (Spain).

THATCHER W. ROOT, PHD, is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Dr. Root was awarded an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and recently received the Benjamin Smith Reynolds Award for Excellence in Teaching Engineers.

An Amazon Best Book of January 2016: The Road to Little Dribbling comes twenty years after Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, in which he first described his love affair with his adopted Great Britain. That first book was laugh-out-loud funny, and so is this one. It opens with Bryson describing (hilariously) the perils of growing older, eventually revealing the author’s successful passing of the Life in Britain Knowledge Test (thus, making him a British citizen). The rest of the book follows that pattern: Bryson describes getting older, and he describes Great Britain via a trip he took across the 700 mile long island. While he tried to avoid places he visited in Notes from a Small Island—he does revisit Dover—those who read the first book will enjoy a welcome sense of the familiar—even if Bryson appears to have grown a little more cynical and angry with age. But give the guy a break: the world is changing, even his beloved “cozy and embraceable” island. I am so sad to say that after loving almost everything Bill Bryson has put out this book is just no fun - it's the ramblings of a cranky old man. I put it down after about 100 pages. Life's too short to read books you are not enjoying.

It is good Bryson, but not his best

It is good Bryson, but not his best. Perhaps my reservation is that I don't live in the UK and therefore couldn't relate to some of the locations. Sections of the book were too repetitious and he seemed to revert to the fart jokes for shock value too often.

Still very readable the freshness has gone and it is a pedestrian piece filled with familiar Bryson mannerisms. I got the feeling that this was written to meet a contractual obligation. For the first time in his many books I found myself disliking the author's persona.

About the Author
Ken Hom is an internationally regarded authority on Chinese and Oriental cooking, and has 25 years' experience as a television chef. He began his culinary career in his uncle's Chicago restaurant at the age of eleven, before eventually moving on to teach at California's Culinary Academy. Following a spell studying gastronomy in France, Ken presented his first TV series in 1984 - Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery on the BBC. Since then, he has written over 30 cookery books and presented numerous internationally distributed television series, and has launched a massively successful range of woks and accessories, with over 7 millions woks sold in 59 countries.

Stir Fry in plain English

I LOVE this book. As a home cook that loves to try new things, this was one of the books that I originally checked out of my local library. I loved it so much, I had to have my own copy. The recipes are so easy to follow, and even though there are some eclectic ingredients listed, there is usually an easy to find and most likely on hand substitution for these things. Like another review pointed out, there is use of British terminology throughout the book, but again, these are explained thoroughly. Every recipe I have tried so far came out tasting amazing. Even the most basic of cooks could handle this book, and come out looking like a stir fry Pro. Highly recommend to add to your cookbook collection.

It's always good to find a cookbook where you use more than 1 or 2 recipes. This one fits the bill. It's my current favourite. Stir fry is my favourite form of cooking and this is my current go-to cookbook. As the cover says "quick and easy". And delicious!! Worth every penny/dime.

Born Jos� Miguel S�nchez G�mez, Yoss assumed his pen name in 1988, when he won the Premio David Award in the science fiction category for Timshel. Together with his peculiar pseudonym, the author's aesthetic of an impentinent rocker has allowed him to stand out amongst his fellow Cuban writers. Earning a degree in Biology in 1991, he went on to graduate from the first ever course on Narrative Techniques at the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Center of Literary Training, in the year 1999. Today, Yoss writes both realistic and science fiction works. Alongside these novels, the author produces essays, Praise for, and compilations, and actively promotes the Cuban science fiction literary workshops, Espiral and Espacio Abierto.

When he isn’t translating, David Frye teaches Latin American culture and society at the University of Michigan. Translations include First New Chronicle and Good Government by Guaman Poma de Ayala (Peru, 1615); The Mangy Parrot by Jos� Joaqu�n Fernandez de Lizardi (Mexico, 1816), for which he received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship; Writing across Cultures: Narrative Transculturation in Latin America by �ngel Rama (Uruguay, 1982), and several Cuban and Spanish novels and poems.

A series of vignettes tied together by similar themes and characters, Yoss' "A Planet for Sale" is one of the most intriguing science fiction books I've read recently.

Earth, in the near future, has been contacted by alien species, collectively known to humans as "xenoids", who were compelled to make themselves known as the world was on the brink of self-destruction. The world is now clandestinely ruled by the xenoid species, preventing humanity from taking a role in the greater galactic community.

Being a Cuban writer, Yoss' use of recent Cuban history as an influence on the conditions of the world in "A Planet for Rent" is hardly passive, showing the oppression of the Cuban people and the corruption of the ruling class through thinly veiled allegories that fit very well in the vision of the future he's skillfully crafted. This book continues a trend I've noticed in my science fiction reading as of late of authors deeply engraining sex into numerous aspects of their works, a trend that has greatly confused me: is it that sex is such a deeply animalistic thing that's programmed into every being, it has to be touched on? Is it that science fiction authors tend to be giant nerds that simply don't get any? A minor part of the work as a greater whole, the inclusion of sexual situations stood out to me.

Minor nitpicking aside, this book make me think, and that's all I really ask for when reading novels. I eagerly await Restless Books's next translation of a Yoss novel, coming summer 2016.

Lost interest

I understand the format of this book is a collection of short stories, so my review is somewhat biased because I didn't realize this when I started reading it. It was interesting right off the bat, and the author introduces some truly compelling characters in the first few chapters. After that, however, I thought it fell flat. The stories of some of the later characters failed to intrigue me. Even the pivotal character, Jowe, who is mentioned by nearly every character, lost his appeal.

This book had promise, but personally, I don't think it delivered. But I am curious about Yoss' other works. He certainly had some fascinating concepts.

I don't usually read Sci-fi but I really did love this. I'm only sorry more of his books haven't been translated to English.
