There's no story

Received an advanced copy for my honest review.

The book makes no sense. There's no chemistry between the characters. There's a hitman and a girl. He kills someone, kidnaps her, and then they have sex because somehow they have feelings for each other.
I just didn't get it.

First I was afraid....then I realized this was a real book and not a spoof

When I open a book I expect some character development, good dialog, a well developed plot and some action and/or romance. What I got was poorly written, under developed plot, and characters that were so unrealistic I thought at first this book was a spoof...until I realized that this wasn't a spoof but a real concept and a real book...all 89 pages of it.

The plot basically is that Gray or Grayson is a killer...a very good killer. He is in a club and he doesn't want to be...sees some woman that is described best as looking like Snow White (her skin was white like fresh snow and she had midnight blue eyes like the sea....the sea has hues of green and blue but, whatever....), they have some poorly developed dialog and then bam, sex, love and mayhem because he is not allowed to bring her to the "kill" house where all the other killers live

And that's the book. Oh and there is some gritty, over described sex in the book. According to the information available about the book it was edited (if that is a true statement then the author should never hire the editor again since it had so many mistakes) What, you need an example? Example- "The place was packed and smelt of sweat, sex and alcohol. The sentence should have been edited to "The club was packed and had a smell of sweat, sex and alcohol." See what I mean? A good editor next time please.

I can always overlook typos, wonky formatting, some spelling errors...hey it happens with indy publishing but this was worse that fan fiction thrown up on a 50 Shades fan site. I wish the author would understand if you have an AND between two words, you don't need a comma after the word. if you string more than three words together, then a comma would be necessary.

I noticed all the 5 stars which makes me wonder if ARCs were giving for reviews. Since I am one of the few verified purchases, I would take those 5 star, gushing reviews with a grain of salt...or several.

Overall, skip it. Save your .99 cents for some really great books that you actually want to spend time with and not this book where you are thrown out of the story so many times because you are going back to correct the author's third grade grammar.

One of the best story collections I've read

This is really a novel in stories, about Socrates Fortlow, released from prison after 27 years and returned to rebuild a life in Watts, in LA. Socrates lives with his violent impulses, determined to live a life of usefulness, compassion, and liberty. Not easy for an aging black man surrounded by violence, drugs, racism, and more.

This has to come close to being the best collection of short-stories written in English during the last twenty years.
At their best the taut writing and uncanny ability to explode the confusion and emptiness at the heart of many people's lives recalls Raymond Carver, but where Carver is content to leave his ethics enigmatic, Mosley is righteous and fierce. This is not to say that the central character, Socrates Fortlow is a judgemental moralist. Far from it. This burly ex-con with his huge rock-crushing hands and terrible past, is searching for truth in a world where truth is no much unfashionable as crushed out of people's souls by injustice. He is a seeker not a saviour.
The stories also form the link between Mosley's crime writing and his outstanding first SF novel, Blue Light, where issues of metaphysics are brought further into the foreground. Through the stories, Socrates acquires a kind of nobility that can only come from a totally honest struggle our own impulses as well as with the environment that surrounds us. There is a sense of place in 'Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned' that is very specific to 1980s Watts, but mythic and resonant and almost timeless at the same time. This only comes from genuine wisdom and understanding, qualities in which Mosley far outshines almost all contemporary authors.
There are one or two weaker stories, notably one in which Socrates gets involved with the courts again, but this is a collection to come back to. And as with Raymond Carver, I felt compelled to stop for quite some time after each one as the subtle but powerful emotional impact percolated through my brain.

Beautifully written, great insight

I heard it was a book of short stories, but found it to read like a novel. Socrates is a deep and thoughtful character who will stay on your mind a long time. He tries to do the right thing in very adverse conditions. This book was an easy read, but deep and beautiful. I'd recommend to every reader I know.

Ravenna is the main character in Knightfall, a well-written and fast paced tale. As the tale starts, Revenna, an inexperienced druidess, has a nightmare that she has had before. It not only troubles her sleep but also that of her Master druid. For that reason, she is sent on a journey to find others who can tell her what the nightmare means.

Hashaar is a merchant and friend of the people in Revenna's village. He is assigned to accompany her on a dangerous trip that may take a month. As they travel, they find a wild elf who is searching for his kidnapped sister. She was stolen right after his village was attacked by a monster on a horse that leaves no tracks. Ohliaman, the wild elf, accompanies them since they are going his way.

One night, as they stay in a town's inn, a rascal becomes impertinent to Revenna. A dwarf named Bromm comes to the travelers' rescue and has to run with them when things become unpleasant. Soon they discover that Bromm is on a mission of his own. A very special item was stolen from the dwarfs by the same monster who has Ohliaman's sister; so he too joins them. Before they realize where the monster is going, a wizard joins them. Raftennon is most secretive, yet he knows that on Revenna's shoulders rests the future of humanity...if humanity has a future.

I enjoyed this high fantasy tale. It is clean, well done and a page-turner. The characters are well developed and easy to like. The writing is easy to follow and fluid. I recommend it for all from young adults to adults alike.
