About the Author
Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her 12 years as an editor at Benjamin Cummings, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is lead author of Campbell Biology � and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

Martha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for over 35 years. She earned her B.A. in biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in science education from Cornell University. She was assistant director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University and is currently a lecturer in the Learning Strategies Center teaching supplemental biology courses. Based on her experiences working with students in classrooms, laboratories, and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all nine editions of Campbell Biology .

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in an advanced biology course. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology � and co-author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

WARNING! No access code in rental.

WARNING!!! Rental does NOT include access code even though the product is titled “Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections Plus MasteringBiology with eText -- Access Card Package (8th Edition).” After you click the 'rent' option, you will see a warning in fine print at the bottom of the rental selection box stating that access codes are not guaranteed. If you miss this tiny warning and proceed with renting, you will most likely receive a used book without a working access code unless you happen to receive a new book for your rental. If you receive a used book for your rental but need the access code, you will need to either keep the rental and buy an access code from Pearson or another source or return the rental and buy a new book with an access code. If you choose to return the rental, your money will be tied up until Rent U receives the returned textbook then refunds your rental fee. Either way, you will need to allow sufficient time to source and obtain your access code. Calling the rental product a textbook with access card package when there is no guarantee that the access card is included is deceptive and needs to be corrected.

It's alive!

I love this Biology book. I first studied biology nearly twenty-five years ago with a huge and lovely biology book written by an author whose name unfortunately escapes me. I loved that book, and have always judged future biology texts against that one; this one measures up well against my memory of that text.
The fourth edition of `Biology: Concepts & Connections' is an excellent, thorough introduction to the science of biology. It is used at the community college where I tutor (biology and other sciences) for general education and nursing students. The book is divided into seven major sections: The Life of a Cell; Cellular Reproduction and Genetics; Concepts of Evolution; Biological Diversity; Animals; Plants; and finally, general Ecology.
After an interesting introduction, which talks about discovery-based science in addition to theoretical/hypothesis science with interesting examples (the Australian Flying Fox, flies that mimic spiders), the first unit on the Life of the Cell looks at basic structure and chemistry of cells. Even though this text deals with chemistry, a chemistry background is not required. Care is taken from the outset to relate the biology tasks to `everyday life', things that people know and care about - there is a look at athletic performance with slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscles, light in the lives of plants, and even look at the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
The unit on Cellular Reproduction and Genetics introduces a hot topic in general conversation today, including discussions of medicine and law in addition to the basic theory, with some of the latest information included. The units on Concepts of Evolution and Biological Diversity include new features such as discussion on mitochondrial DNA comparison and the use of molecular clocks to date divergence in evolutionary paths. Topics such as increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics are discussed, and the interesting evolutionary situation of Australia, separated from the major landmasses of the rest of the world, shows an interesting side-show on biological diversity.
The unit on Animals will be the most interesting for many, and the diversity here includes discussions from geckos to bears to human traits shared with and different from other animals. Particularly for our nursing students, the sections on respiration (anaerobic and aerobic), broken bones, immune systems, blood-cell diseases and the like really drive home the need for a basic understanding of biology.
The units on Plants and Ecology draw in the larger mass of living things sharing our planet, work to show how the environment operates from the standpoint of individual plants to entire ecosystems. Interesting current topics such as organic farming, population ecology, endangered species and global warming drive home the importance of biology.
The book is very colourful, both in text copy and in pictures. Headers reinforce the broader topics while modules give key concepts within each broad topic. Diagrams are arranged with numbered steps to help understanding, and there are frequent references to website and CD-ROM additions. Key questions are asked at each conceptual point. The `behind the scenes' information helps reinforce the concepts both with the hot topics involved in biological issues today, as well as the personalities driving the science in key areas. Each chapter has a summary of key points, concept questions and multiple-choice questions for test preparation. There are well over 100 `Connection' Modules and `Talking about Science' Modules. Each of the 38 chapters has an interesting, inviting essay as introduction. There are probably 200 CD-ROM and website activities to engage the students, everything from the cloning of genes in bacteria to steroid hormone action to the Honeybee waggle dance.
This is a very good book, with lots of information - it is also a flexible book, and certain portions can be omitted in a syllabus without diminishing the overall text. I find myself constantly glancing through the chapters and reading the interesting essays and connection modules between my tutoring appointments. That's the mark of a good textbook.

New Fifth Edition Brings Everything Up To Date

This new Fifth Edition of an old standby. The book retains it's aim of engaging students from a wide variety of majors in the wonders of the living world. It relates the basic concepts of biology to concepts in every day life, to evolution, and to the process of science.

About the Author

Dr. Changhong Ke is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Dr. Ke received his BS (1997) and MS (2000) from the Beijing Institute of Technology in China, and his Ph.D (2006) in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University. His Ph.D dissertation focuses on the development of a carbon nanotube-based bistable nanoswitch for applications of memory elements and sensors. After finishing his Ph.D, Dr. Ke worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Duke University (2006–2007) where he conducted research on the topics of nanomechanics of single DNA/RNA molecules and radiation-induced DNA damage. His current research focuses on the nanomechanics of novel 1D and 2D nanostructures, nanoscale adhesion and interfaces, bio-inspired complex and hybrid systems, and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Dr. Ke is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and the Biophysical Society.

Great way to review for the NYSTCE Visual Atst CST!

I recently passed the NYSTCE Visual Arts CST with only these flash cards as a review tool. I felt prepared, and I found the flashcards to be a really useful tool to remind myself about different artists, materials, and procedures that would be on the test.

PROS:
* You can review for the CST easily and efficiently with these cards. They are portable and easy to carry around in a rubber band.
* The information is more challenging than what you will find on the actual test, so when taking the test you will feel very prepared.
* Cards are organized with a heading, such as "Visual Arts Materials and Processes," "Aesthetic and Interdisciplinary Connections," etc. (The different areas on the test.)

CONS:
* The flashcards come in sheets and you have to punch them out yourself.
* The flashcards have small type and very dense, concentrated information on them.
* The information on the cards looks a little scary because it is so in-depth. Just keep this in mind as you use the cards as a review tool.
* Don't expect flashy or pretty cards with colors or images. These are just text-based cards. (Kind of a bummer for a test about VISUAL ART!)

Overall, this is a great way to review for the Visual Arts CST. A classmate of mine got the cards and the study book by the same company and found having the two materials to be redundant. I recommend getting one or the other (whether you prefer a book style or a flash card style approach).

Flash cards for certification test worked great

Teacher certification is very important and I wanted to get mine in visual arts. I learned a lot in my own classes and when I was looking forward to the test, I knew I would have to spit a lot of that information back out in the test. How I would remember it all, however, I was unsure. I found these flash cards and was so relieved that they had all of the information on them I needed to know. They were made for teachers who wanted to get certified in visual arts! Since that's me, I grabbed the cards right away and got to work. Better yet, they didn't cost much! But I would have paid a lot more for what they gave me. I really feel like they helped me not only pass the test, but have less nerves leading up to it. When I took the test, I was calm and collected because I knew I studied the right information hard with the help of the flash cards. The cards worked great and I think they are a wonderful addition to any study collection for other teachers who want to get certified in visual arts.

Excellent book for people exploring the field. It gives a complete overview that lets you understand the product strengths and shortcommings. Like the previous reader said it feels like you are given agreat demo of the product.
This book is great when you are analizing the product but it is not if you want to use it. It dosent help you to setup or configure the product.
Towards the end the pictures lack some explanations. I think the book is not finished, but it is great for its purpose

What a great book! Very easy read and provides a not only a great overview of the key features in Dynamics AX but also the key integration points with the Microsoft Suite of products. You feel like you are getting a personal demo of Dynamics AX and at the end of the demo you are telling yourself I want to learn more. Fast-paced mayhem!

I can go a long time between stories about vampires. I can also go a long time between stories with confronting sex.

But when I do read them I want them to be good, so I’m pleased I fell off the wagon and picked them up.

This is one such book. And to top off my luck it’s full of vampires AND sex. AND it’s told with a needle-point wit.

Told in the first person it’s the story of Jade, a young woman drawn into the world of vampires. Because we’re taken into her mind and heart we’re sucked (no pun intended) very quickly into the vortex of her fears and desires.

The pace never slackens; it’s top gear all the way. And dare I say I’m liking her choice of vampire mate!

I am 110% addicted to this series!!

WHOAAAAALY MOLEY!! WOW! Just...WOW! What a fangtastic vampire tale! It is very intriguing, sexy, mystical, appalling, hot, magical, appealing, creepy, funny, snarky, shocking, passionate, awesome and oh so fangelicious all rolled up into this storyline that doesn't just grab your attention, it yanks you so far into the storyline that everything Jade feels, so do you…right down to the very depths of your soul! Jade is one unique character that is hard to explain, yet I loved her all the same. At times I thought she was in her later twenties, other times late teens, but yet I was still surprised when I did find out how old she really is! In some ways (the “normal” ones) she was a character I could totally relate to, understand why she did the things she did, but other times she reminded me of a 4 yr old who missed her much needed afternoon nap! Or a spanking. LOL Yet through it all I found myself rooting for her, admiring her, crying with & for her and yes, I will admit it, I was even a little jealous of her! I mean come on! Not one but TWO vampires vying for her attention? Maybe in different ways (I was nothing better than vampire bait), but still – TWO VAMPIRES!!! I love how the characters are all given their own story within the story. The vampires all have these unique abilities, or powers, how they came to be, etc. If you take all of these pieces - from the humor to the fear, the sass, the anger, the humans, vampires and everything else that this story encompasses, well, I find it all very over-the-top PERFANGTION! Thea has woven all of these parts together so magically that you can't help but be held spellbound! It all works together so beautifully, creating this fangtabulous story that by all rights should be too busy and/or hard to follow, but it isn't! Thea has achieved what so few authors can - a uniquely dark, naughty, evil, sassy & sarcastically witty vampire romance series! It is one helluva read that has so many components to it, mostly dark ones, but it still stays light enough to not become a true horror story. There is just enough humor, hints of romance & determination to not just survive, but to live that keeps this story so engrossing, entertaining and hopeful that maybe it will become a romance where the girl DOES get her vampire. Okay, maybe that hope is all mine! To me a great vampire book is one which includes the vampire declaring his true love for me, his one & only soul mate that he wants to claim, then change me to spend eternity by his side. Or under him...over him...*drool* Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, that Thea is one fangtastically talented author who has me so enthralled that I don't ever want this to end! I have read a ton of vampire books. I have read a ton of other types of paranormal books. Some of those were light fluff, some great romances. Then there are the few that defy being categorized. This...this is one such story, book and series! YES! It truly is THAT FANGTASMIC! Thea is one helluva Master Storyteller for sure!! I cannot wait to see what future she has in store for us errrr, I mean Jade!!

Now I read book 1 in its entirety, but I did add a quick review for each of the 3 parts that make up this book 1 as follows:
THE RECRUITER REVIEW:
WOW!! Talk about being sucked completely into a book! This had me from the very start and I couldn't believe it when I hit "This story continues with the Priestess"! I love me my Vampires, but this is something different altogether. It's got all the makings of a great story - humor, sadness, broken heart, evil, mystery, intrigue and oh so much more! I cannot wait to find out who the good guy is, if the magic is real, if the curse is real, etc.
THE PRIESTESS REVIEW:
WHEW!! Just when you think you have SOMETHING figured out, WHAM! You find out just how wrong you are! I LOVE IT!! In this part Jade is trying to figure out just what the hell happened to her, but you also get to know her somewhat, or at least some of what got her here. As for figuring out anything else...well Thea expertly feeds us just enough information to feed OUR addiction, to whet our appetite, so to speak. Of course that also means that what information we are given just makes us thirsty for more! I have become a thrall - so easy to control! Must keep reading!! Must break spell...or get lost in it even deeper! Whichever way the rabbit hole goes. :-)
THE MEDIUM REVIEW:
Okay! Now THIS part is more closer to what I thought this story might be like...closer, but not too close! LOL There was definitely a lot more twists & turns that I was NOT in any way, shape or form expecting! WOW! Who'd a thunk it?!? Jade definitely pissed someone off in this life or her past ones because she sure got the wrong end happening to her now! I like that we got to know her a little more, but she is over-the-top sass! I know she has been through, well, everything, but really!?! Can she not dial back that attitude a bit, even in her own head?? Of course, that is just one more reason as to why I thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to continue Jade's adventure in Vampire Land!

It is extremely hard to describe Jade and Magnus' relationship. The book is full of heat, snark, sexyou banter, outsiders trying to interrupt their private time together. It's not your normal Vampire meets girl, sticks his fangs in and voila' you have a relationship. It builds slowly, but with a lot of heat and passion. I've heard the words fantastic, but I prefer organically blood induced sexual gymnastics. A definite read if you love "real" women and possessive Vampires. Thea Atkinson has made a 4☆ book well worth reading !!.

About the Author
W. S. Merwin, poet, translator, and environmental activist, is one of the most widely read--and imitated--poets in America. The son of a Presbyterian minister, whom he began writing hymns for at the age of five, Merwin went to Europe as a young man and developed a love of languages that led to work as a literary translator. Over the years his poetic voice has moved from the more formal and medieval--influenced somewhat by Robert Graves and the medieval
poetry he was then translating--to a more distinctly American voice, following his two years in Boston where he got to know Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Adrienne Rich, and Donald Hall, all of whom were breaking out of the rhetoric of the 1950s. Merwin’s recent poetry is perhaps his most personal, arising from his deeply held beliefs. He is not only profoundly anti-imperialist, pacifist, and environmentalist but also possessed by an intimate feeling for landscape and language and the ways land and language interflow. His latest poems are densely imagistic and full of an intimate awareness of the natural world.

His first book, A Mask for Janus, was chosen by W. H. Auden in 1952 for the Yale Younger Poets Prize. The Carrier of Ladders received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize. Among his other books of poems are The Drunk in the Furnace, The Moving Target, The Lice, Flower & Hand, The Compass Flower, Feathers from the Hill, Opening the Hand, The Rain in the Trees, Travels, The Vixen, The Lost Upland, Unframed Originals, The Folding Cliffs, The River Sound, The Pupil, a translation of Dante’s Purgatorio the critically lauded translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, as well as Present Company, which won the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry, Migration: Selected Poems 1951-2001, which won the National Book Award, and The Shadow of Sirius, which received the Pulitzer Prize (Merwin's second). A two-volume set, The Collected Poems of W. S. Merwin, was published in May 2013. Merwin's prose includes The Mays of Ventadorn, part of the National Geographic Directions series, The Ends of the Earth (essays), and the memoir Summer Doorways. Recent reissues of his books are The First Four Books of Poems, Spanish Ballads, translations of Jean Follain’s poetry collection Transparence of the World and Antonio Porchia’s Voices, and The Book of Fables, a reissue of (The Miner’s Pale Children and Houses and Travelers). Forthcoming are the poetry collection Before Morning (Copper Canyon, April 2014) and a booklength essay, Unchopping a Tree (Trinity University Press, March 2014).

Merwin was named poetry consultant to the Library of Congress in 1999, along with poets Rita Dove and Louise Gl�ck. He has been honored as laureate of the Struga Poetry Evenings Festival in Macedonia and as recipient of the international Golden Wreath Award, the 2004 Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award, the Pulitzer Prize (twice), the National Book Award, the Tanning Prize, the Bollingen Prize, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, and the first Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award, in 2013. He was appointed U.S. poet laureate in 2010.

Merwin has spent the last thirty years planting nineteen acres with over 800 species of palm, creating a sustainable forest; the property recently became the Merwin Conservancy (http://www.merwinconservancy.org). He lives, writes, and gardens on the island of Maui, in Hawai‘i.

Liz Ward is a professor of art and art history at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and an artist who works primarily in painting and drawing with an emphasis on works on paper. She received her M.F.A. in painting from the University of Houston and her B.F.A. in printmaking from the University of New Mexico. The art included in W. S. Merwin's Unchopping a Tree is from her series "The Cellular Life of a Tree." She lives in Castroville, Texas.

Start with the leaves, the small twigs, and the nest that have been shaken, ripped, or broken off by the fall; these must be gathered and attached once again to their respective places. It is not arduous work, unless major limbs have been smashed or mutilated.

If the fall was carefully and correctly planned, the chances of anything of the kind happening will have been reduced. Again, much depends upon the size, age, shape, and species of the tree. Still, you will be lucky if you can get through this stage without having to use machinery.

Even in the best of circumstances it is a labor that will make you wish often that you had won the favor of the universe of ants, the empire of mice, or at least a local tribe of squirrels, and could enlist their labors and their talents. But no, they leave you to it. They have learned, with time. This is men’s work.

This short, quick read book is a poetically written story about how one would methodically, delicately and effectively "unchop a tree" - basically put a tree that has been chopped down back together. It is a sweet, short story that leaves you with a smile and wandering thought.

J. Michael Straczynski starts writing the Amazing Spider-Man

Here is the deal: J. Michael Straczynski took over as the writer of Volume 2 of "The Amazing Spider-Man" with issue #30 and has been effectively "re-inventing" the character (but in a decidedly different way than what you find being done by Brian Michael Bendis in "The Ultimate Spider-Man," which is more a "re-imaginging"). "Coming Home" reprints issues #30-35 of the title, in which Straczynski come up with a striking new interpretation of the Spider-Man mythos. Clearly, then, the point of this trade paperback volume is to help new readers get on board and if not totally up to speed, at least within shouting distance. Taken together with the follow-up volume, "Revelations," these two books can do the trick.
"Coming Home" suggests that there is great significance to the fact that Spider-Man has been fighting villains like Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, the Lizard, the Scorpion, the Rhino, ad infinitum, all these years. Peter Parker meets Ezekiel, one of those mysterious stranger types who brings havoc to a superheroes life, who suggest that Spider-Man's powers might not be quite as unique as he thought. In other words, the idea that a bite from a radioactive spider would give someone the powers of a spider is a bit far fetched and there is another explanation. To drive the point home Spider-Man has to tackle Morlun, a being who feeds on the power of humans with totemistic powers and apparently the only way to survive the encounter is to hide his powers from his new opponent.
Unlike what Alan Moore did with Swamp Thing, the twist on Spider-Man's origin that Straczynski has come up with does not threaten to unravel the entire Spider-Man mythos. At that same time that Peter is being told that Spider-Man may well be the avatar of the Earth's spider population, he also takes a job as a high school science teacher. Meanwhile, there are still those marital problems with Mary Jane and at the end of this book Aunt May finds Peter him bruised, beaten, and bandaged, in a deep sleep, his tattered Spider-Man costume at his feet. This sets the stage for the next trade paper back collection, "Revelations," as Straczynski and artist John Romita, Jr. continue to turn the world of Peter Parker and Spider-Man upside down and inside out.

Not ground-breaking, but solid storytelling

This book does demonstrate the wisdom of Marvel continuing with the 'classic' Spider-Man in light of the Ultimate Spider-Man revamp. While Brian Michael Bendis is doing a great job with the teenage Peter Parker learning to be a hero, it's nice to see writers like J. Michael Straczynski work with the older, more experienced Peter, a hero who knows what he's doing and has a higher degree of self-confidence as a result.
Straczynski seems to be trying to shake up the status quo a bit here, with questions about the nature of Spider-Man's powers. Unfortunately a lot of the supposedly dramatic revelations feel like things that we've seen before in superhero comics. It's all solidly crafted, but it's not revolutionary, so the plot doesn't have a lot of edge-of-your-seat suspense. (The epilogue, on the other hand, is a bit of a cliffhanger separate from this book's plot.)
The book is a worthwhile read nonetheless, because Straczynski does a solid job with the characterization and, for the most part, the dialogue. Peter's inner monologue and interactions with villains, allies and bystanders are all entertaining. There's a good balance between light moments and action-adventure. Straczynski seems to be enjoying himself here, and that carries through to the reader.
The art by John Romita, Jr. and Scott Hanna with colors by Dan Kemp and Avalon Studios is solid on both the character moments and the action sequences. Romita is a fine storyteller whose pencils have a distinct style well-suited for an urban hero and his exploits, and the rest of the team complements him perfectly.

Great Story, Great Artwork, and a great ride!

This trade paperback book was actually released as "Spider-man: Coming Home".
J. Michael Straczynski, the mastermind behind Babylon 5 and Rising Stars, has penned a brilliant story of Peter Parker, aka Spider-man. This trade paperback is a self-contained book that covers Peter's battle with a creature that wants to steal his life essence!
Peter first meets Ezekiel, an old man with powers much like his own. Ezekiel warns him of a creature that has been hunting super beings for hundred of years, and it has come to New York to hunt and feed on Peter. Ezekiel gives Peter a question which may forever change his conception of his powers: "Was it the radiated spider that gave you those powers, or was the spider trying to give you those powers before the radiation killed it?"
The question is almost as perplexing as the answer may be. However, there is not time to delve into it, as the villain has decided to destroy parts of the city to lure out Spider-man. The first battle does not last long, as Peter realizes that his opponent is near invulnerable. He runs away, only to find that his enemy can find him anywhere he goes. Peter's body is utterly broken, and he decides on a last ditch scheme that will allow him to defeat his opponent, but will probably kill him in the process!
This is a fantastic book for any fan of comic book. Straczynski is clearly a masterful storyteller, keeping the reader glued on every page. You can hear every thought Peter has as he tries to understand his life. You can feel every pain Peter has as his immortal opponent beats him to a pulp. Straczynski is doing what he does best - tell a story.
The artwork is also strangely very good. I have never been a fan of John Romita Jr, but the color-artist that works on his artwork does a fantastic job of bringing every page to life. The reader is treated to a wonderful ballet of colors and excellent flow of story imagery. I was definitely surprised by the quality of artwork in this book.
I highly recommend this book for all comic book fans out there, as well as anyone interested in literature in general. This is truly a fantastic story that is hidden in the format of a comic book. Great Story, Great Artwork, and possibly the best last page of any comic book I have ever read.

Comprehensive Treatment of Optical Communication

This is a superb study of electrodynamic theory as applied to polarization optics in todays (and tomorrow'a) telecommunication technology. As far as this review knows there is nothing like it available in the field. The book fills a very real need for those in the telecommunications field and for engineers and scientists who want to come up (or return) to speed in modern physical optics.

Polarization optics is being used routinely in communication systems, but there has been a need for workers and graduate students to have an entry (as well as an advanced) treatise on the subject. Damask's comprehensive stand-alone volume satisfies this need profoundly. In fact, due to its clear exposition of the frewquently complex material, the volume would make an outstanding text for a grad course in EE and physics. It is highly recommended.

I needed this text book in order to understand the various approaches to optical circulators. As a result we may now design and build one.
