At Disney he also served as Head of Special Effects Units for the Disney features Kingdom of the Sun and Tarzan, and was Special Effects Animator on such notable titles as Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, James and the Giant Peach, Hercules and Mulan. He served as Designer and Supervisor for all 2D and 3D visual effects on the television series Silverwing, and Chaotic at Bardel Animation in Vancouver. He has also designed and directed a wide variety of television commercials. Clients include General Motors, CocaCola, Honda, MacDonald's, Gillette, Players Tobacco, Larrouse Dictionaries, and Radio Quebec. For almost three years, he was the Head of animation, and Digital Character animation at the Vancouver Film School. He lectures at animation schools in Canada, Europe and Asia, and has conducted workshops at animation festivals and schools around the world. he is a professional musician and performer as well. I've been hoping for years that someone would write a comprehensive book on 2D effects animation. Something more than the little "how to draw and flapping flag" or "how to make a fire cycle" bits that get tacked on in other animation books.

Disney veteran Joseph Gilland has finally given us that first book dedicated to 2D effects animation. He's broken down effects into four broad categories (water/liquids, fire/smoke, props/solid objects and magical effects) and laid out the principles needed to bring them to life on paper.

Since every real-world splash and flame is unique, Elemental Magic isn't so much of a "how to draw" type book as it is a "how to approach" book. Gilland breaks down the basic behaviors of different types of matter and the working methods needed for an animator to capture the dynamic essence of an effect without being tied to a hyper-real style or getting bogged down in an unmanageable level of detail.

And this book doesn't solely apply to hand-drawn effects. Each section on a type of matter includes several pages on how to apply these classical animation principles to digital effects work. How to get the most out the computer's ability to do the heavy lifting on effects.

Hopefully this isn't the last book ever published on 2D effects animation. Gilland himself mentions that he's only scratching the surface with this book and that water, smoke or any other element could warrant a full volume treatment.

I hope someone takes him up on that offer, and with Elemental Magic we now have a solid foundation to build on.

What Belies This Cover? Elemental Magic--A Critical Review

If the old adage, "Never judge a book by its cover," holds true, then Elemental Magic certainly reinforces this notion. If there's any concern, it's that the wonders of this book may be passed up because of this nondescript cover layout. I also feel the author could have come up with a more intriguing sub-title.

When I first opened this soft cover, rectangular book, and I thought "OMG!" Inside, this book looks like an illustrator's private sketch book. Hundreds of beautifully hand-drawn, colored sketches: some segregated from the text, others used as a background (watermarked) with the text overlaid.

Next to each illustration is a brief, but thorough explanation of the process. And, the key to understanding this message is summed up in one word: energy.

Joseph Gilland, the author, is a 30-year animator and has worked on some of the biggest animation features over the past 20+ years including Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, Pocohantas and a few others. Some of the sketches that became film cells are reproduced with his notes below the art!

The book is outline with two (2) brief chapters before he introduces the philosophy of animation: The Preface and The History of Classical Animation. The remainder of the book gives step by step analysis not of how to sketch a flame or construct an iceberg, for instance, but of the techniques of how to get in touch with what he refers to as the "energy of the elements." How does one capture the essence of a burning flame? Shattered glass? A wisp of smoke or the pixie dust floating through gust of wind? There is a way to see it, Gilland explains, and it is connecting to the unique movement ("energy") of that natural (i.e., fire, water, rocks, lava, smoke, flame, glass, frost, liquids, etc.) element.

I've been a fine artist and an illustrator for more than 30 years and more recently a graphic artist. Over the years, I've collected many books by celebrated artist, but this is the first by a Western artist that stresses the spiritual dimension of the subject in order to identify with its characteristics. His words and explanations are quite refreshing. I found myself thinking, "How come I hadn't figure that out!"

One of a kind

Joseph Gilland has done a great service by creating this book, which intricately details both the thought process and raw mechanics behind traditional, hand-drawn effects animation - a discipline that rarely takes center stage in a character-oriented animation industry. I've been looking for a resource like this for years, and there really hasn't been anything like it before this book. I can whole-heartedly recommend it for any animator with an interest in broadening their understanding of effects, the drawings contained within are worth the price alone.

A wild life...mystery, thriller

I just finished The Dummy Line (for the second time) and really enjoyed it. Great first novel. The charters and the various scenes were built with reality and suspense. I hated the bad guys and cheered for the good ones.

I did wonder how Bobby Cole knew how to fight so dirty. Knocking out the football stars' teeth on the bumper of the Jeep was rough. He also knew about "cut shells" and I always thought only poachers knew that trick (often used during bird season, before deer season). As a former game warden I knew that method. The authors' worldly knowledge of the "wild" shows up well in his writing and story.

Mr. Cole has a formula for success. Like the mystery thrillers from Harlan Coben and William Tapply, he has developed a character that has staying power. I also enjoy John Sandford and William Kent Krueger because of the state theme and location. Michael McGarrity has the SW theme and character, Kevin Kerney. Cole has all those elements with Jake and the south (West Point, MS). Plus he have woods wisdom and hunting knowledge.

I will be on the lookout for the next Jake Crosby novel. Good job!

Comedy of errors in Alabama

Bumbling, vicious rednecks. Small town Keystone cops. And a father fighting for his own safety and protecting others along the way.

I enjoyed "The Dummy Line" and I see real potential in a writing career for Bobby Cole. Was this first book of his perfect? No. It could have been tightened up by probably 30-40 pages and been a much cleaner read. Cole tended to be wordy (for example how many times does the reader need to have the lodge with its pinup collection described) and his characters made the same mistakes repeatedly, where once would have sufficed.

But...I still enjoyed the backwoods flavor of the story. I enjoyed the descriptive passages about an area I've never visited. I enjoyed the hunting backdrop. I could tell that Cole was writing about an area and activity that he knows well. This gave an air of authenticity to the work that is so often missing in books where the author gets background by offsite research only.

I thought character development was good on the main protagonist and most of the auxiliary characters. The bad guys were drawn well, ignorant yet feral. Actually I think some of their relatives live near me. I've really met some losers that are too similar. The sheriff and his deputies could have been toned down a bit. They were so bumbling to be almost caricatures.

But all that written, I enjoyed the story a lot. I was willing to overlook the weaknesses because I thought the story itself was strong.

Protective father, tomboy loveable daughter, vicious rednecks that want to cause trouble for trouble's sake, underappreciated sheriff and his Barney Fife squad, media hungry older sheriff and two teenagers thrown into the mix to pull on your heartstrings. Formulaic but a formula I like. I will be looking for future books from Cole because I think he'll just get better. I hope he keeps writing.

Great Read!!!!!

What a great read! This book gripped me in the first chapter and would not let go until I finished it....I simply did not want to put it down. The action is fast paced and the vivid descriptions make you feel like you are right there fighting along side of Jake, Katy and the rest of the characters! I highly recommend this book!!!!!

Very Solid Introductory book.

I have been programming in C and C++ for about 6 years. That does not make me a leading expert, but certainly competent. A friend of mine was looking for a good book to teach an introductory programming class at a community college and he asked me to look this over and give my opinion.
My response was that this is a very easy to follow book. If you cannot learn C++ from this book, then you cannot learn C++. Now it is absolutely a beginners book and does not go into advanced topics. But if you are looking for a very solid introductory book. All the basics are laid out in a step by step easy to read format. COMPLETE code samples are spelled out in the text.
I must make a comment to the reviewer that gave this one star based on 'formatting'...I am not a particular fan of this author. I have only read one of his other books, and did not particularly care for it. However the comment that the code is not indented properly is simply laughable. Most of us are concerned with the accuracy and clarity of a programming book, not with how far the author indents code in a function....
Bottom line is that if you want a solid intro book this is it.

I have been programming for a long time. But from time to time I like to look over beginners books, to see how good they are. This one is pretty good. The code examples that I checked (about 1/4 of them) worked exactly as written. The text was very clear. The code and the text follow ISO standard C++ pretty well, and let you know anything that deviates.
I thought that this is one of the top 10 best beginners books. Deitel and Deitel are just too complex for beginners (but a great place for you after you have a few months of C++ under your belt), Schildts books are too long, etc. This book is short and to the point. In a little over 300 pages you get the essentials of C++. However it should be noted that you get the ESSENTIALS...it does not even try to cover many advanced topics. And thats probably one of the books strengths. It does not confuse the beginner with extra things they don't need.
I think if you are looking for a first C++ book then this is one of the top 10 on the market...

IT HELPED ME

Look, I have never programmed in my life. This book says it was meant for people like me. As I read the book it was very easy to understand. The code examples worked exactly as written. In short I started this book not having a clue how to program and by the time I was done I had written several. I was also able, after reading this book, to move on to more complex books. Finally I give this five stars because of the author. I had a question and used his website to email him. He responded quickly and politely and helped me. And that was very nice of him.
I see the other reviews of this book are mixed. I guess its true what they say, different strokes for different folks. Some people love this book, some people don't. My advice is that if you know little or nothing, and want to be writting C++ programs quickly, then this is your book.

Sorrowful Sameness

Alien: Sea of Sorrows is the sequel to Alien: Out of the Shadows, which in turn was an interquel between Alien and Aliens, but Sea of Sorrows takes place so much later in the timeline that it's also a sequel to Alien Resurrection, while in many ways feeling like a loose remake of Aliens. Still following me?

If you've read Out of the Shadows and watched Aliens, there's virtually nothing new here. I kept waiting for some shocking twist, some sort of revelation, but aside from a bit at the very end that offers a tantalizing glimpse into the next--and hopefully more interesting--book, this is paint-by-numbers Aliens stuff: The big tough soldiers go down to the remote colony and start getting picked off one by one by nasty, drooling monsters while the soulless corporate representatives pull the strings. If you're even remotely familiar with how Alien stories work, you've seen all this before, and done better.

Nearly one-third of this all-too-familiar 350-page trip is spent just getting to the main story proper. Until then, you'll be getting uncomfortably acquainted with our protagonist, Decker, the thoroughly unlikeable male lead who seemingly doesn't think anyone else is likeable either, unless they have nice boobs. All of the women he interacts with in any significant way, he either is indifferent to, hates or wants in his bed. An early scene in the book sees Decker badly wounded, barely staying conscious, but all the while still staring at the cleavage of the medic working on him, and wanting to say dirty things to her even though he doesn't have the strength to talk.

The book handles women poorly in general, seeming to go out of its way to describe various women as "attractive" and little else, which is not only feels a bit sexist but is a rather lazy way to avoid actually describing the physical features of the characters in any detail. For a series that spawned Ellen Ripley, one of the greatest leading ladies in sci-fi history, it's sad seeing the female members of the cast handled in such a flat, immature manner.

Speaking of Ripley, even she is damaged by this book, as the story foolishly elevates her and her entire family line to the status of "Destroyer," hated by the entire xenomorph race for generations. Like the bemoaned midi-chlorians that plagued the Star Wars prequels and ruined the hopes of every fan that dreamed of being a Jedi, tearing Ripley away from her blue-collar roots and making the Ripley family into some sort of race of destined warriors ruins her connection to the everyman (everywoman?) and turns her whole lineage into ridiculous superheroes.

But back to Decker. His failure as a main character radiates intensely enough to harm the story as a whole. You see, Decker is an empath, meaning he's able to sense the emotions of others--humans *and* aliens. Not only is this supernatural nonsense out of place in the grungy, realistic, tactile Alien universe, this leads to scads of awkward, blunt writing, where Decker merely *states* how other characters are feeling instead of letting the readers pick up on context themselves. It also results in a lot of panic attacks as the outside emotions overtake him. A LOT of panic attacks. A tiresome amount of panic attacks. But the most grievous sin: This power lets Decker know when the aliens are going to strike. It's difficult to get wrapped up in suspense and paranoia when the book is basically telling you, "Hey, something's about to jump out now. You should be scared."

Not that there would be much to be scared of even without the prior warning. Like in so many unfortunate video game incarnations, the aliens themselves have lost a good deal of their punch and end up as cannon fodder far too often. Sure, they still kill a lot of people, but these are not the same aliens that repeatedly forced a group of well-armed Colonial Marines into retreat time and time again back on LV-426. In the book, one battle against a massive horde of aliens is literally won by a character standing in one place and holding down the trigger on their gun until all of the aliens die. Really. The tension flies out the window when you know the heroes can just blast everything to bits with their seemingly endless supplies of ammunition.

The experience isn't completely dire, however. In a surprisingly well-done storytelling mechanic, the action is spread out across various teams working at the colony, letting events unfold from several different viewpoints simultaneously. It should come as no shock that things get a lot more riveting when the action pulls away from Decker, towards the other characters who are genuinely vulnerable and don't have alien-detecting spidey sense (even if they're still extremely thin on characterization).

Still, in the end, there's very little that makes this book worthwhile. It fails to shed much light on aspects of the Alien mythos you didn't already know about (aside from the stupid Ripley "Destroyer" thing, and a brief mention of the aftermath of the Auriga crash), and simply isn't scary enough, surprising enough, exciting enough and doesn't have interesting enough characters for it to stand on its own. If you're desperately craving some sci-fi action, no matter how trite or derivative, Alien: Sea of Sorrows is easy enough to digest. Otherwise, this is strictly for the Alien completionist who must have everything the series offers.

the rest of the novel is pretty darn good

Though this is the second in a new trilogy of novels set in the Aliens universe, Sea of Sorrows only ties in with Tim Lebbon's opening novel Alien: Out of the Shadows insofar as it has a common setting. But the action takes place about 300 years after the events of that novel, ensuring there are no repeat characters to follow along for the ride. Instead, we get Decker, who, as the blurb reveals, is a descendent of Ellen Ripley. This means that the Aliens harbour a particularly impressive grudge against him as they somehow know he is a descendent of Ripley - the human they identify as The Destroyer - and feel an all compelling desire to rend him limb from limb...

So, yeah. This book is basically the futuristic version of Jaws: The Revenge.

If you can manage to make your mind suspend its disbelief past this point, the rest of the novel is pretty darn good. The writing is decent, the set up is good, and the action set pieces are more varied than that of the previous novel. All the Aliens tropes are also in place: Ill-advised effort to capture the aliens by Weland-Yutani? Check. Reluctant guide who knows more than the fighting types he's going to accompany into the lair? Check. Shady bureaucrat who is only concerned with profit and his/her own safety? Check and check (there are two). Mayhem and slaughter with an increasingly small cast trying to get out of said lair alive? Check. It's like Moore took the film Aliens and wrapped it in a slightly varied outer shell of goodness, so if you liked that, you're not going to go far wrong with this.

My issues are small but significant with the primary among them being the cast is simply too large. Only a few of the mercenaries that accompany Decker down the mine shaft are detailed enough to be discernible; some have a single character trait that is meant to define them (eg. Silent Dave); others get introduced and a character point is emphasised only to go nowhere (eg. Piotrowicz and his recording of everything for money). Then there is the ending, which though it wraps up the events on New Galveston in an acceptable way, leaves several plot threads hanging. Given the next book goes back to provide more detail the aliens on LV-426, I was hoping for something a bit more final here. I can't even hope the survivors of Sea of Sorrows might tie into events of Alien: Resurrection since the dates between this book and that film don't match up (the book taking place about a hundred years after the film). Hence, some frustration on my behalf ...

Recommended to anyone who is also a fan of the Aliens universe.

This was an enjoyable read overall. But...as other readers have pointed out, no new real territory was covered. In fact, a lot of metaphorical and literal territory is tread upon again.

The book follows a basic formula set by the film franchise (particularly Aliens and Alien Resurrection): Hubris filled characters seek to destroy/capture/exploit the xenomorphs and get their hindquarters kicked in the initial phase of the operation, everything falls apart and the plot turns into a race to survive the alien onslaught and escape the colony/ship. Underlying everything is a corporate or military entity whose greed is eventually responsible for the failure of the mission and a betrayal.

The bad thing about this is that so much of what happens in this novel is very predictable. No real shockers here or any plot twists. The good thing is...well, it give a lot of what the franchise is known for and what makes it great in the first place (gruesome deaths at the claws of vicious yet crafty monsters).

In this novel, a thumbnail sketch of the premise is that Weyland-Yutani is back in business and still wants live xenomorphs for its bio-weapons division. They hire a platoon sized group of mercenaries to head out to a colonized, terraformed planet in where an ancient alien ship and city (and abandoned mining facility) has been found under the planet's surface. Caught up in all this is a minor official from the International Commerce Commission named Alan Decker, who is both a mild empathy and a very distant relative of Ellen Ripley. Decker runs afoul of the W-Y company who, wanting him for his very mild empathic abilities, "leverage" him into accompanying the mercenaries to capture an alien.

The story is pretty straightforward and, once the mission gets underway and underground, is pretty well paced. I did enjoy the story as it hit all the touchstones in the alien universe. The empathic abilities of Decker were interesting. It felt right that they were underdeveloped somewhat and no more use than basically a tripwire to warn of approaching danger. As a new ability manifesting in mankind slowly it felt appropriate that it would be wielded like an unfamiliar, unsharpened tool.

One of the things that took away from my enjoyment of the book was how little character development there was. I felt the book would have been a little better if the author had focused a bit more tightly on a select number of characters than try and span the large number of people involved in the mission and touch on many just a little. Along with Decker there are thirty-six mercenaries, a group of seven scientists examining the alien ship and a few miscellaneous W-Y and colonial representatives topside on the planet. More than 50 characters and the author names them all and drops some minor development of some of the supporting characters (just enough to barely distinguish them from each other when the slaughter begins). It felt like the author was spreading himself thinly across the cast.

Side note to this: The author makes mention a good number of times of the exact number of mercs on the mission yet by the end of the book I felt like had named more than three dozen. And I was right. A quick review of the book showed he had named forty-one. A minor issue but it bothered me like the poor editing of Alien 3 bothered fans of the films.

First with your head, then with your heart.

After being told for years that I should "just sit down write a novel", I decided to do just that; sit down and write a novel. Surprise! It doesn't work like that--although in my Aspie brain I was certain that it worked like that for every other writer on the planet and I was just intrinsically, and irreparably, lacking.

Surely, I thought, there must be a book or two on how to write books? I can't possibly be the only person in the world who can't pound out best-selling first drafts in six weeks, right? Right?

The universe sighed and shook its head. "Oh, child...."

And so I have spent the past year reading every book I can get my hands on regarding everything from voice to POV, from syntax to context, from showing to telling, from snowflakes to arcs. I discovered there is more fine-tuning of technical aspects in writing than there is in ice-dancing a Russian ballet. Still, something was missing.

"But universe," I whined, "I want to take people on a journey. I want them to feel like they're on an emotional rollercoaster. No one talks about that, so am I just some touchy-feely, over-the-top idealist who needs to turn it down a notch or five?"

The universe answered by chucking this book at my head.

The first thing I gleaned from this book was that I wasn't flawed but rather I had been inherently right in my need to write from the heart. I learned that my characters can't be real until I give them that spark of life that comes from me. I learned I wasn't wrong in what I wanted to accomplish.

What I did learn was how to accomplish it.

Like "Bird by Bird", this book was a game changer for me. The examples given clearly demonstrated the techniques being discussed. The assignments, as they were, helped me explore aspects of my characters and my story that I had always felt were there, but hidden. I now have more avenues available to develop a deeper, more meaningful journey for the characters and the readers. This book will be close by, a constant reference, as I finish my first draft and happily begin my second.

If you enjoy books on writing craft, then this is one you will treasure. Where others teach you how to write with your head, this one will show you how to write with your heart.

The Single Most Distinctive Writing Book I've Ever Read

I've been a professional writer since '72, and have been reading how-to books on writing (and taking classes) to improve my craft, for nearly as long. Over this long time, I have quite literally never come across a book like this before. Don Maass, a New York literary agent, writes about how to evoke emotional responses in readers - not in characters (though he covers that, too). Instead, he makes the case that having characters experience emotions doesn't always trigger that in readers (in fact, he suggests that usually doesn't work). Then, having shot down (logically, and with support) the idea that characters experiencing emotions equals readers experiencing emotions, he then shows how - in several chapters - how to reliably evoking strong, memorable and satisfying emotions in your readers. This isn't a 30,000-foot overview, this is down in the weeds, with specific examples and details.

I'm finding all kinds of useful tools in this book, including 34 sets of exercises, usually involving writing or rewriting a scene or chapter in your book to evoke emotion. These exercises are usually divided into ten to twenty steps - this is very detailed.

In reading this book with my trusty yellow high-lighter pen in hand, I not only terminally colored the book bright neon yellow, I’ve filled my notebook with about 40 pages of scrawled ideas that will make my in-progress novel a lot better – and this is before I get to doing the 34 sets of exercises. Seriously, if you read this book with an eye on really learning how to improve your fiction writing, this book is an entire college class’s worth of material (I say that, having taught writing and book/author/publisher promotion as an adjunct prof at four colleges and universities). To really understand all the insights (I’ve been writing professionally since ’72 and I’d never encountered most of these ideas), you have to study the book, taking notes as if each chapter or sub-chapter was a classroom lecture Then, doing justice to the 34 sets of exercises will take months - but that will be time well-spent. This will work best if you have a novel you're working on or have recently finished in draft form. Going through the exercises will make your book measurably better. Which is why this is unlike any how-to writing book I’ve ever encountered.

Bottom Line: If you're serious about this book, you'll learn a lot.

One final note. Don Maass also uses examples from classic and current books- these are presented as icons of successful emotional impact (he doesn't find fault, but finds positive examples). My favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird, but he cites others that had such impact that I've ordered them from Amazon.

If you want your characters to be more than cardboard, and want your readers to respond emotionally, get this book and make it your study-guide.

Another Must-Read from Maass

Suspense!

This is just by far the novel of the year for me--profound and beautiful and edge-of-your-seat thrilling at the same time. Where did this John Wray come from? I hadn't heard about either of his other two novels, although the critics seem to have gone ga-ga over them, too. I can't gush over this book enough. I was so entertained and entranced reading it that at one point I didn't even realize I was crying. I just flipped over this thing. Did I mention that it's also really funny?

Problematic

It's inevitable that John Wray's LOWBOY be compared with Mark Haddon's THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME. The difference, it seems to me, is that Haddon had experience working with autistic children. I never got that sense with Wray's book.

A review on the back cover of LOWBOY refers to the main character, Will Heller, as "a hero as three-dimensional as any in recent fiction." Ironically, that's the problem I had with the book. All of the characters seemed flat to me, including Will. Most of the time, Will doesn't seem all that schizophrenic. Sure he tries to mate with a bag lady, and he has a delusion that if he has sex he can stop the destruction of the earth through global warming, but in other respects he doesn`t do that much except ride the subway and bump into denizens of the deep who aren`t that interesting either. Even his nickname, Lowboy, is a kind of furniture. Emily, his girlfriend, may have some emotional problems of her own. Will originally gets in trouble because she tried to hug him and he pushed her onto the subway tracks because he didn't like being touched. But she comes back for more, apparently because Will looks a lot like Brad Pitt. At one point she tells Will that he should never wear pants, but then she freaks out when he gets serious. The detective in the story, Ali Lateef, who is trying to track Will down, seems more interested in Will's mother, Violet. About the only surprise in the story is Violet's so-called secret.

The minor characters are even less interesting. Skull and Bones, Will's attendants before his escape onto the subway, are practically invisible. Heather Covington, the bag lady Will meets in the subway tunnels, is pretty much a stereotype.

I cannot think of one character I could identify with and that wasn't the case with Haddon's book. Christopher Boone inspires empathy; when Christopher was afraid, I was afraid. Mark Haddon put me in Christopher's shoes. That doesn't happen in Wray's book.

John Wray's masterpiece

Having stumbled upon this novel quite by accident, I was mesmerized by the story of a psychotic adolescent who has escaped from a mental institution and his mother's frantic efforts to save him or to save anyone whom he might harm in a story that covers just a little over 24 hours.

Many parts of the book are told through the paranoid schizophrenic eyes of the beautiful 16-year old boy, adding a great deal of realism to the tragic yet hopeful story. Wray has apparently accomplished a great deal of insight into the mind of paranoid schizophrenia as well as the mind of innocent youth throughout the world.

Woven into this thrilling story is the beautiful and enigmatic mother and the thoughtful and provocative detective she hires to catch the boy before he harms himself or someone in his way to accomplish what he must accomplish to save the world.

Reserve some time for this novel because once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down.
