Definitely an old classic

Like many British Aerodynamicists, I was taught the basics of aerofoil and wing design using courses based on this book. It covers much the same ground as Prandtl and Tietjens, but in a much clearer fashion. Of particular interest is the development of lifting-surface theory for finite wings using Fourier analysis.
Although most of what is contained in this book has been overtaken by new technology, the strength of the analytical approach shown here is that it gives the reader a better intuitive handle on the sensitivities of different parameters in the design problem.

Great book

This is a great book on fundamental principles of aerodynamics. I used it during my final year of aeronautical engineering at the university in the mid-1980s. Certainly not for the beginner but rather those with a good background in Mathematics and Physics and are seeking a rigorous treatment of the subject would find the book interesting and useful.

The book has stood the test of time although it can do with some updates to take into account the latest analytical tools.

Great read!

Well-written and destined to be read again. Does what my teachers in school could never do - make science, studies, and psychology interesting to me.

Who doesn't want to learn more about how they function in their lives and why they do stupid things? I came at this book from the perspective of learning about myself and I found I learned a ton about human nature and neuropsychology. I definitely did not expect that, or to enjoy a book that essentially talks about the brain.

Easy reading and thoroughly enjoyable. And yes, I am one of those people that takes advantages of people's brain farts (I'm in marketing). Good selection of topics I've not seen written about before.

I love me some popular psychology books

I love me some popular psychology books. There's a group of scientists somewhere conducting experiments that affect how we should act and what we should do, but they're not often publicized as much as they should be.

And learning about superstitions and magical thinking was the cherry on top. Wealth of information here about how we want to maintain the illusion of control. I couldn't help but think how very human that all seemed. Anyway dense, great impulse buy.

I'm not a psychologist but I almost feel like I could be... Okay that's a stretch but I do feel like I learned more about the brain than all of my college psych courses. I was a little skeptical about this book because it seems like pseudo science disguised as real science, but I was pleasantly proven wrong.

Thinking wrong, thinking too confidently, or thinking against our own interests: there are brain-related causes for all of these things which were fascinating to discover.

I have three aims for this book. The first goal is to teach you the vocabulary and grammar of predicate logic so that you will be able to translate the sentences of English (or other natural languages) into the notation of this important branch of symbolic logic. The second goal concerns three techniques for evaluating predicate arguments: formal proofs, counterexamples, and truth trees. I aim to help you become proficient in employing these logical methods. The third goal of the book is to develop your ability to identify and assess those predicate arguments you encounter daily as you read books and newspapers, carry on conversations, and watch television. Most of the examples and exercises in the text involve arguments of this everyday variety.

I enjoyed writing the book. If you enjoy studying it (as I hope you will), I think my goals will be achieved.

This text presupposes familiarity with propositional logic and, in particular, acquaintance with the natural-deduction approach to formal proofs and the technique of two-sided truth trees. Appendix One contains a review of this material, but it is too compact to be fully intelligible to the complete novice. A discussion of these techniques is provided in the companion volume, Introduction to Logic: Propositional Logic, revised third edition.

Predicate logic is developed gradually in this book, starting with the simplest monadic symbolizations and proceeding through multiple quantification to the logic of relations. Students learn to symbolize and evaluate arguments of a given degree of complexity before addressing the symbolization of more complex problems.

The formal-proof. system presented here does not include a universal-quantifier introduction rule. The advantages of this approach are that the quantifier rules can be stated more simply and that proofs (although often longer) are often easier to devise. A universal-quantifier introduction rule is provided in a footnote at the start of section 4.2 to accommodate students of teachers who prefer to include this rule.

Most of the examples and exercises center around arguments similar to those encountered by students. The majority of these arguments are natural, rather than contrived; many are presented by direct quotation from newspapers and other sources. My purposes in employing natural everyday arguments are (1) to evoke the reader's interest, (2) to counter the common but mistaken view that formal logic is just an impractical academic diversion, and (3) to improve students' capacity to notice and assess the arguments they encounter. The final chapter explicitly addresses the problems that arise when predicate logic is applied to natural arguments.

The second edition has been extensively revised. It differs from the first edition mainly in these ways:

* The book has been reorganized to allow students to develop symbolization and proof-construction skills even more gradually.
* There is a chapter on two-sided truth trees. Some instructors prefer to teach one-sided trees; a chapter explaining that technique is included on the CD-ROM disk packaged with the book.
* New sections treat possible-world counterexamples, intensional contexts, quantifier scope, and quantifier order.
* There are more exercises, and most of the original exercises and examples have been replaced by better and more current ones.
* The book is accompanied by a tutorial program, "PredLogic," written by Mark Pospesel and me. This Windows-based software provides an environment in which students symbolize sentences, construct proofs of validity, devise counterexamples, and create truth trees. The program enables students to catch errors as they are made, and it offers hints for solving problems.
* William G. Lycan has provided an appendix on the metatheory of predicate logic.
* This edition uses parenthesis-free quantifier symbols. These symbols have become standard since the first edition was published, and they are more suitable for doing logic on a computer. Gender-neutral language is used throughout. The chapter on logic diagrams (that appeared in the first edition) has been moved to the CD-ROM disk that accompanies the book.

Software works perfect in Windows7 64bit. For as old as the software is, I can tell that it was really well written. I am impressed with this book because of how the author follows and takes off from E.J. Lemmon's book Beginning Logic.

Victor Mancini is a ruthless con artist. Victor Mancini is a med-school dropout who's taken a job playing an Irish indentured servant in a colonial-era theme park in order to help care for his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother. Victor Mancini is a sex addict. Victor Mancini is a direct descendant of Jesus Christ. All of these statements about the protagonist of Choke are more or less true. Welcome, once again, to the world of Chuck Palahniuk.

"Art never comes from happiness." So says Mancini's mother only a few pages into the novel. Given her own dicey and melodramatic style of parenting, you would think that her son's life would be chock-full of nothing but art. Alas, that's not the case. In the fine tradition of Oedipus, Stephen Dedalus, and Anthony Soprano, Victor hasn't quite reconciled his issues with his mother. Instead, he's trawling sexual-addiction recovery meetings for dates and purposely choking in restaurants for a few moments of attention. Longing for a hug, in other words, he's settling for the Heimlich.

Thematically, this is pretty familiar Palahniuk territory. It would be a pity to disclose the surprises of the plot, but suffice it to say that what we have here is a little bit of Tom Robbins's Another Roadside Attraction, a little bit of Don DeLillo's The Day Room, and, well, a little bit of Fight Club. Just as with Fight Club and the other two novels under Palahniuk's belt, we get a smattering of gloriously unflinching sound bites, including this skeptical bit on prayer chains: "A spiritual pyramid scheme. As if you can gang up on God. Bully him around."

Whether this is the novel that will break Palahniuk into the mainstream is hard to say. For a fourth book, in fact, the ratio of iffy, "dude"-intensive dialogue to interesting and insightful passages is a little higher than we might wish. In the end, though, the author's nerve and daring pull the whole thing off--just barely. And what's next for Victor Mancini's creator? Leave the last word to him, declaring as he does in the final pages: "Maybe it's our job to invent something better.... What it's going to be, I don't know." --Bob Michaels

While it's always interesting to hear authors read their own work, this production is not likely to prompt a narrating career for Palahniuk (Fight Club) on par with his literary accomplishments. That's not to say, however, that his style doesn't work with this offbeat story of a sex-addicted medical school dropout whose gift is pretending to choke in restaurants and reaping the sympathy checks of the people who "save" him in order to pay for the care of his sick mother. Palahniuk reads with a husky, occasionally whiny voice that's rushed and intense. At times it seems like he's not reading at all, but reciting the novel from memory as he paces the floor with a cup of coffee in one hand and the fingers of the other pressed to his forehead while a cigarette smolders away in the ashtray. He brings a unique sensibility and opts for inflections that other narrators probably would not. After the book implores listeners to turn away and go no further in Chapter 1, for instance, Palahniuk reads the words "Chapter 2" in a tone of voice that says, "OK, you asked for it." That's a fitting sentiment for those who choose to listen, as this bizarre story is by turns hilarious and depressing, read in an idiosyncratic manner by an idiosyncratic author.

In the course of his three novels (e.g., Fight Club), Palahniuk has become a master of depicting the dark and depraved underbelly of our society through the voices of mordantly existential protagonists. Choke is no exception. This time around, readers are ushered into a world of sexaholics, historical theme parks, and other bizarre matters by Victor Mancini, a medical school dropout who has resorted to fake choking in restaurants in order to pay the hospital expenses for his elderly mother, Ida. Ida also happens to be an anarchist whose social terror campaigns made Victor's childhood less than stable. Such is the universe of Palahniuk, who calls the norms of our society into question by presenting us with a parallel world where most of what we hold to be true is exposed as hallow or insane. His writing is as good and as funny as ever, and like many other Palahniuk characters, Victor is quite memorable. Some readers may be shocked and even repulsed by much of the subject matter here. Still, it is recommended for most public and academic libraries.

Crazy Read

One crazy read. My preference is an edgy, gritty novel: bold language, absurd creativity, preposterous characterization, wrapped tightly in a strange story. Choke has it all in multiples, almost to the point of bad taste. At one point, about Chapter 8, the ludicrous characterizations of geriatrics humor began to wear on me and careened off into the ditch of crude and poor writing judgment.

So, I put it aside for a couple of days until curiosity won out. Glad it did. Once past that Chapter 8 mudhole, I began to figure out the brilliant complexity of the story. The humor is very good, strong visualizations, certifiable protag. It became a fun read.

The format, ‘first person present tense,’ is masterfully done. The present tense for an entire novel can get tedious. It needs a great writer to pull it off. Palahniuk does it to perfection. The to and fro on the chronology... a little fatiguing.

Beware, the subject matter is highly graphic and requires a stout constitution. Bingo. On to the Fight Club next. I’m stuffing Palahniuk into the same envelope as Cormac, Woodrell, Pollock, Lansdale, etc. He's in good company.

Though Highly Original, Runs Out of Steam

I ordered this book after reading a plot synopsis and being intrigued, coupled with the fact that the author also wrote Fight Club, one of the most original and compelling movies I’ve seen. It has elements of borderline pornography, so if that bothers you look elsewhere, as the protagonist is a sex addict.

In addition to being sexually impulsive, Victor must support his delusional mother in an assisted care facility, at a cost of $3,000 per month. How to raise that kind of money on a menial, minimum wage job? Victor trolls through area restaurants, staging choking incidents, compelling patrons to “save his life”. Having done so, he finds they subsequently feel responsible for his well-being, sending him money from time to time. The story cycles through choking incidents, sexual encounters, visits between Victor and his Mom (past and present), Victor’s job as a colonial reenactor and his relationship with his best friend, Denny.

The story is filled with other characters, just as “damaged” as Victor. This is certainly original and initially quite entertaining, but though short, it runs out of steam well before a nice plot twist near the end.

All Choke'd Up

I'm not an avid reader. At all. I'm one of the guys who saw a movie and wanted to pick up the book to compare and be able to finally tell people "Yeah, the book is bla bla bla compared to the movie." Maybe this will give me a point in credibility to my hipster friends.

I must say that I'm glad to have picked this title up. The movie isn't for everybody. The book isn't for everybody. This is because the story isn't for everybody. If you are like me and enjoy dark humor with a psychological twist and are not easily offended then this story is for you. For more detail about what this story is actually about then read the amazon review or one of the many other reviews.

To get to the book specifically (while catering to those who are like me and admittingly do not read often), I will say this was a great casual read. It was fun flipping through the pages with the movie in mind and comparing mental notes about accuracy and placement of the story. Since I was going into this book with very little care to the translation from book to film I wasn't disappointed. In fact I felt it was a great supplement to the movie. Yes, some charactors aren't portrayed exactly alike. No, the ending isn't the same, it's quite different. But what a great ride it was. Plus, for a casual reader such as myself the fact that the 304 page book is broken up into many chapters averaging 4 to 7 pages, makes it a great "pick up, put down" or "toilet read."

This book sparks my interest enough to actually start reading more books, and of course starting with another title by Chuck. Maybe Fight Club, but I would like to read another title that isn't accompanied by a movie. I'm curious to see what goes through my mind without the mental images a film director and actors already fed me.

Disappointing, Confusing and Convoluted ... For Die-Hard Meltzer/Thriller Fans Only

Like most Brad Meltzer books, The Inner Circle concerns a bright young man who works in Washington, DC. This time, instead of working on Capitol Hill (The Zero Game) or at the Supreme Court (The Tenth Justice), our "hero" works in the National Archives. (I can't help but wonder if Meltzer is running out of high-powered DC settings for his characters. Yet, sadly, the setting of the National Archives was the most exciting aspect of the book for me.) Beecher White is a serious young man who is struggling to recover from a recent split with his fiancee. His path to recovery is helped when his childhood crush, Clementine Kaye, shows up and asks for his help in tracking down her long-lost father.

Although Beecher and Clementine haven't seen each other since high school, Beecher has never really gotten over his crush. During a tour of the archives, Beecher tries to impress Clementine by showing her the secret vault where the president reviews classified documents. However, while inside the vault, they stumble across a hidden document--a dictionary that belonged to George Washington. Although their find seems innocuous at first, within moments a man turns up dead. Beecher and Clementine seem to have stumbled into a high-level conspiracy linked to the President ... but who is involved and what do they want? And what does an old dictionary that once belonged to George Washington have to do with it? As Beecher and Clementine struggle to find out what is going on, things get more convoluted and confusing (for Beecher as well as the reader). As events unfold, Beecher begins to question the motives of everyone around him, including Clementine.

As with previous Meltzer books, this is meant to be a fast-paced thriller involving innocents stumbling into conspiracies at the highest echelons of power. However, I think Meltzer is off his game as I found the plot confusing (by the end, I still wasn't 100% sure what was going on) and the characters dull and uninspiring. I really enjoyed Meltzer's first few books; they were fun, exciting and drew me in. However, I thought his recent books got progressively weaker. The last one I read, The Book of Fate, seemed like a bad Dan Brown book--and that is saying something as I'm not a huge Dan Brown fan. (Note: For fans of The Book of Fate, I should mention that a character who appeared in that book shows up in this book as well.) I'd written off Meltzer as having "jumped the shark," but when I saw The Inner Circle offered for review on NetGalley, I decided to give him another shot. Sadly, I regret that decision.

Although The Inner Circle isn't outright bad, I found the plot confusing and overly convoluted. By the end, I wasn't even sure who was on whose side and what the purpose of the book was. Then I read Swapna's review at S. Krishna's Books and discovered that The Inner Circle is the first book of a planned series, which probably explained why I was left with such a sense of confusion and "unfinishedness." Yet, at the same time, I wasn't compelled enough by this book to continue reading the series. Honestly, I didn't feel all that invested in Beecher and don't feel the need to find out what befalls him next. Not a good sign for the series, I think. However, there is always the possibility that I'm just being a crank.

As far as my recommendation, I can't really recommend this book unless you are a hard-core Meltzer fan or really love thrillers. I would recommend Meltzer's earlier books though; I remember being very fond of them, and I was a devoted Meltzer reader until I thought his books started to decrease in quality. If you're looking for a good thriller, you'd be better off reading The Zero Game or The Tenth Justice and giving this one a pass.

Brad Meltzer is a fine author and I devoured this book in a few days but after it was over my only thought was that I had wasted those few days on a book that held so much promise, was quite a page turner, had a unique plot but went into a deep hole of incomprehension and stupidity. I hated myself for having a hard time putting this book down yet never figuring out what it was all about.
Essentially, it is a story about an archivist for the U.S. Government who stumbles upon a secret hidden within a book that leads to a plot involving the President of the United States, past Presidents and a number of both unsavory and decent characters who populate this often confusing novel. One of them is a childhood sweetheart who has secrets of her own and another involves an elderly archivist who seems to know an awful lot about the conspiracies taking place as well as the people involved. Yet another is an accused assassin who resides in one of the lowest security mental institutions on the face of the earth.
The essence of the story surrounds The Culper Ring who comprise of ...well if I say too much, it will give away too much plot and frankly, I was so confused about who The Culper Ring were that I couldn't even explain it if I want. Apparently the Culper Ring is based upon historic fact but Meltzer fails to make the history come alive in this complex mess.
Meltzer ends almost each of the 121 chapters with some sort of cliff hanging sentence or event. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these are horrible red herrings that lead to nowhere. The dialog is excruciating at times are as the convoluted explanations by many of the characters as to their motivations, theories, and feelings. Just when you think the bad guy is good or the good guy is bad, Meltzer turns the tables...then he does it again..and again!!
There are so many illogical plot points, way too many "narrow escapes" and sappy chitchat.
Again, I read every word of this novel (which is why I gave it two stars instead of 1 to assuage my guilt for the time spent) hoping that it would make some sense with some sort of fascinating and dramatic climax only to be saddened by the lack of execution and satisfaction. Read some his past books and avoid this one.

Once upon a time I was a huge fan of Brad Meltzer and then I hit a few of his books that were not as entertaining and I stopped reading his stuff.

However, the Inner Circle sounded like a great read and I found myself completely engrossed in the storyline from the very first few pages. Of course, there has been, of late, a huge increase in the "historical - present day' type of novel - easily compared to the DaVinci Code (which I hated by the way) and Inner Circle reminded me of this type of genre.

Actually the storyline is quite clever if a little far fetched. Our main character Benjamin meets up with his long lost Clementine who is asking for his help. As it turns out Benjamin's job is about old documents and archives, some of which are directly associated with the President.

While Benjamin is trying to impress Clementine by showing her a vault where the President reads classified and, for the most part, priceless documents, they `discover' an old dictionary and immediately start to wonder why the President would have kept it from being discovered.

Yep, like I said the storyline is just a tad `out there, but I have to say that I completely loved to read this book. The pace is perfect and the suspense is extremely engrossing. I found myself anticipating the next move (and the next page).

The ride is a little crazy and I loved every moment of it. It kind of reminded me of the National Treasure movies - completely off the wall and so much fun that I have rewatched them over and over again - much like this book I suspect.
