Unbelievable Source of Strength for Career Growth!!

This book is simply incredible! I have read many self-help books over the years, and having been in the business world for all of those years, I have never seen both areas (self-help and career) integrated so well in one place. In "The Authentic Career" I was able to unlock how my career goals and personal needs could be aligned and fulfilled with the appropriate insights into my life. This book can really help individuals create the space to achieve this. Ms. Craddock's own experiences and using real examples of workplace issues were extremely helpful and enlightening. I could approach my job and career in a completely different light after reading and utilizing this book. The exercises were truly eye opening and I finally have found a process that makes sense for re-energizing and strategizing my career after many years. A great read for anyone who wants to find a new way to grow in their career and personal lives. Very helpful and inspirational!

The book is four-stage self-inquiry process by Executive Coach Maggie Craddock. Ms. Craddock's exercises comprise mind, body, and spirit in interactive exercises and follow-up action items. Her book was very helpful for me with respect to a recent career change from public relations to producing executive conferences for the pharmaceutical industry. The Authentic Career process a vital compass point in the navigation of a life-long work life.

The job market is moving at lightning speed. It is now essential for young professionals to assess their skills, talents, and values before taking life-altering paths. As for seasoned workers, The Authentic Career offers a balance between effective career evaluation and proactive actions consistent with one's values and needs in a professional context. This book that avoids the trap of "analysis paralysis" and aids to forwards anyone into decisive action.

About the Author

Alain Corbin is a French historian and specialist of nineteenth-century France. His publications include Women for Hire: Prostitution and Sexuality in France After 1850; The Foul and the Fragrant: Odor and the French Social Imagination; Village Bells; and The Life of an Unknown.

Jean-Jacques Courtine is professor of European studies at the University of Auckland, and professor emeritus at the Sorbonne nouvelle (Paris III) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. With Alain Corbin and Georges Vigarello, he edited Histoire du corps (History of the Body). His publications include Histoire du visage (History of the Face) and D�chiffrer le corps. Penser avec Foucault (Deciphering the Body. Thinking with Foucault).

Georges Vigarello is one of Europe's best-known historians of the body. He has published prolifically on topics ranging from Concepts of Cleanliness and the cultural history of sports to The History of Rape and The History of the Body. He is research director at the �cole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales (EHESS), and the author, most recently, of The Metamorphoses of Fat: A History of Obesity.

I found this book as engaging as it is delightful and informative. One might expect a book on the life of tugs to offer only quick diversion, but Tugboats Illustrated provides a deep dive into a fascinating and surprisingly rich subject. Having spent time near the oceans, harbors and river ports throughout my life, unanswered musings about working boats & ships that have floated around my head since childhood, and this book gives them satisfyingly coherent form and context. While many of the specific boats featured are in the northeastern US, the scope of the book is more global, helping to explain the visual characteristics of tugs, and why they look the way they do. The many tasks that tugs perform are beautifully described, and both the universal similarities and the local peculiarities that shape the design and development of tug design and operation are brought vividly to life.
The photos and illustrations are effective at introducing and describing individual topics within the chapters, and the text provides lucid and occasionally poetic reinforcement for the graphics. But the illustrations are the real stars. The drawings are consistently clear and communicative of the point being explored, whether in a simple drawing of a "boot-heel pilot-house", or in sophisticated cut-away views of propulsion systems. The drawings are not showy or elegant, but (like tugs themselves) they are pragmatic and charming, and express the author's great skill in explaining great complexity with graphic aplomb.
If you ever suspected that tugboats were cool, this book will confirm your suspicions, and let you know why!

Hard to Catagorize

This book was not what I expected, when I placed my order. I thought it would be similar to other transportation related books by this publisher and consist of a large number of well-composed high quality photos of tugs and their operations with substantive supporting text. Instead, the preponderance of the illustrations are made up of the author's sketches of tugboats, selected associated components and systems, and key functions. The photographs, most of which are in color, depict very few tugs in their entirety thereby not providing a very good overview of how tugboats evolved and how those used by different companies differed. The book presents itself as a high-level overview with a somewhat whimsical slant.

My real question is who is the intended audience for the book. It almost appears that it is meant to be a book for juveniles instead of a serious work for people with an interest in maritime subjects. For example, one page consists of a reproduction of a NEW YORKER magazine cover depicting whales docking a cruise ship, while another has sketches comparing a tug looking like a house with a house looking like a tug. It does not compare well, in my opinion, with previous books on the subject published in the UK.

Having said this, the author has created some good explanatory sketches, which along with the text are generally accurate. I believe it would appeal to younger readers or an adult with a passing interest in maritime matters.

I purchased this book for my father-in-law as a Boat-Warming (is that a thing?), and he loves it! The images are awesome, and it's chock-full of information about tugboats. Definitely a niche audience, but if you're into tugboats, go for it!

Sexy, funny and stimulating

This is another book in the series begun with "The Abduction of Julia". It centers now around the St. John `talisman ring' which rumor has it that whichever St. John is in possession of the ring will find their one true love. With this novel the ring rests in the pocket of renowned scoundrel Brandon St. John who must decide if it is a blessing ... or a curse as he has yet to find a woman that holds his interest for more than two weeks!
Drawing the short straw, so to speak at the latest St. John family gathering Brandon has been assigned the task to `buy off' an undesirable demimonde from the attentions of their younger brother Chase. These St. John men, all handsome to a fault and wealthy to boot have had much experience in thwarting the attentions of marriage minded mamas and their daughters so Brandon, the handsomest of the lot, thinks that this shouldn't take him more than a few minutes time. Expecting a hard, painted, money-hungry grasping widow, the Lady Verena Westforth was definitely out of the ordinary. Lady Verena - blond lovely and indeed enticing - she would put the arrogant, pompous Brandon St. John in his place!
Along with the lovely and comical battle of the sexes, there is a mystery and a murder to solve in which Verena is smack dab in the middle. Verena has grown to enjoy her independence until this wonderfully handsome man has aroused feelings she thought long dead. Her family background and secrets could destroy her should the investigations uncover her past - but more than that she could very well lose her heart.
This was a really good story with the added excitement and mystery of a murder and hunt for a missing list. The characters are extremely well developed, intelligent, and interesting. The introduction of Verena's butler in training - Herbert - the reformed(?) pickpocket provides numerous light hearted moments and the love scenes as Brandon, that handsome devil - shows us his stuff - well he is HOT! Excellent read which I can highly recommend.

3 1/2 stars - Who's the scoundrel here - Verena?

At the close of An Affair to Remember an unhappy Brandon St John discovers the dreaded Talisman ring in his piece of wedding cake nearly breaking a tooth! The holder of the ring is destined to meet his true love, but Brandon doesn't believe in such legends. All the same, he'll palm it off on one of his brothers if the opportunity presents itself! It seems like bad luck is all the ring has brought him when his brothers give him the unpleasant task of buying off Chase's latest paramour, worried the gold-digger will trap Chase into marriage. Family head Marcus warns Brandon that "Lady Westforth is not a milquetoast female . . . I advise you to approach her carefully". Truer words were never spoken!
Widowed Lady Verena Westforth has been relegated to the very fringe of society by her vengeful father-in-law. He never approved of her - her parents are charlatans for heaven's sake! - believes her responsible for his son's death and has done his best to ruin her reputation in polite society. And so, she exists in the demimonde supporting herself by some low-key card sharping in gaming hells. But she's no man's mistress and, unbeknownst to Brandon, has already let Chase down easy and sent him on his way. But that does not stop her from having a little fun at the overbearing Brandon's expense. Soon all of society is giggling behind his back - intolerable! And when Verena's brother is blackmailed, Brandon's friend's freedom is threatened and the solution to both is finding a list of British agents abroad, are Verena and Brandon adversaries or allies? One thing is certainly clear - they are extremely attracted to one another!
So why only 3 1/2 stars? SEMI-SPOILERS! Well, first, why would Brandon stick his neck out for a school chum who sounded more like an acquaintance? And while there's plenty of lust and even camaraderie between Brandon and Verena, I didn't feel like they were in love. No love is declared until the last chapter when he is suddenly, out of the blue, planning a wedding! And lastly, the whole blackmail scheme seemed ridiculously convoluted to me. I guess I'm being picky, but I gave An Affair to Remember 4 stars and, though I enjoyed this book, it's not as good as that one in my opinion and I just could not rate them the same. Still, all in all, an enjoyable read.

Karen Hawkins Just Gets Better and Better

I've been "glomming" Karen Hawkins since The Abduction of Julia and my expectations for this author have been surpassed quite wonderfully!
If you are in the mood for a book that will make you laugh out loud and impress you with details, this is the book for you!
I was continually surprised by the "little things" such as:
The morning meeting between the St. John brothers ("Perhaps we should call for a nice cool pitcher of water... that should get this slugabed on his feet.") - Who hasn't been threatened with cold water in order to wake up!
Herberts ("Oiye trys to keep up wif me hobbies!") Talk about laugh out loud funny!
Poole's concern for his employer (the "vile stuff" to help a hangover and the "punch drink" for a sore throat)
Verena's payback for Brandon's assuptions (the necklet was an added bonus)
The love scene in the sitting room struck a cord. It wasn't adding an "unnecessary" love scene (as so many authors are guilty of) but showed the couple's love. The entire scene was romantic without being sappy.
If I continue I will end up spoiling the fun so let me end this by saying I look forward to all future books by this amazing author, especially Chase's story :)

Pocket-sized gem!

I got this to use as an adjunct to all my other review books to study for my FNP licensing exam. Compact and succinct, this book is a little gem. Literally pocket-sized, this book is a great size to fit in a lab coat and peruse during your 'free' time. I love the many algorithms and pearls of wisdom. I would heartily suggest this book to my fellow DNP students.

decent review for Step 3

This book has a niche, in that it really is dual-use: boards and wards. It also is general enough to cover most subjects, but specific enough for you to get most of the questions right on Step 3. There are some minor errors, but nothing too bad. But if you're studying for step 2 or trying to do really well on step 3, you should supplement with other material (in addition to Uworld).

Pioneer Girl

I almost hate to admit it, but I got myself a little confused reading Pioneer Girl by Bich Minh Nguyen and had to go back and reread the book's description to figure out just what it was that I was reading. It's a novel, but the characters are so convincing that I started to feel like I was reading a non-fiction memoir.

I've reread the Little House books as an adult, but it still amazes me how many details from those books are stuck so clearly in my memory. Reading this book made me want to revisit them. If you're not already familiar with Rose Wilder Lane and her possible role in writing the Little House books, it's an interesting story. Those facts are woven in with Lee's pursuit of the truth behind her gold pin. I highly recommend this one.

The cover of this book reminded me of illustrations seen on Lois Lenski's books for young readers. Books I used to read back when I was in grade school, and enjoyed for the wholesome stories they told of life back in the olden days. Pioneer Girl has nothing to do with Lois's works though. Instead, it relates more to Laura Ingalls Wilder's book by the same name. Thus, if you enjoyed stories of Laura in the Big Woods as a child, I think you should read this book.

There is a part in the beginning of this book that reveals a secret, and foolishly I felt a rush of excitement as I discovered what the secret meant. I felt as though I were the one that had put the pieces together to make sense of what the characters had already found. The rest of the story is like this somewhat--letting the reader feel as though they are a step ahead of the characters, when in reality the reader is not. I was so enthralled by the story this book told that I had a hard time setting it down. It weaves a tale that is fictional, but has a significant amount of true facts thrown in; making it easy for me as a reader to believe the story to be partially true. I will admit, as I began to read this book, I found myself looking at the cover and synopsis several times, just to make sure it really was fiction.

Mesmerizing mix

If this intriguing layered novel only told the family focused story of Lee Lien, a book-nerdy young woman with an on-hold academic career trying to straddle the contrasting cultures and conflicting expectations of modern America, where she was born, and traditional pre-war Vietnam, where her strong-willed mother and gracious grandfather spent the earlier parts of their lives, that would have been enough to capture my interest.

If instead Pioneer Girl was simply a literary mystery, with Lee Lien so obsessed by a book related incident that may connect her family's former Saigon restaurant to the author(s) of the Little House on the Prairie series that she chases clues across the country, from dusty library shelves to colorfully painted San Francisco neighborhoods, even abandoning her normally somewhat passive upright nature long enough to slip archival materials into her handbag, I'd make sure to get my hands on a copy.

But Pioneer Girl is both books, and talk about obsessed, I couldn't put it down. This isn't the kind of mystery with dead bodies or definite answers, but that just made this coming of age quest all the more intriguing.

Most helpful cookbook I've ever bought

This is probably the most helpful cookbook I’ve ever purchased. I’ve never owned a cast iron skillet before and decided to purchase one last week and immediately became intimidated. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING, the first four chapters are dedicated solely to maintenance and proper care of the skillet as well as how to clean and season it over time. I can’t believe what I’ve been missing, the coconut chicken tenders are perfect and crispy, and I can’t imagine what they’ll be like after a few years of use. And the cherry glazed pork chops are PERFECT, a combination I would’ve never thought of. Gordon Rock is quickly becoming my favorite author of cookbooks!

Fits well in my kitchen!

I am getting reaquainted with my cast iron pans. The versatility of these pans is amazing. I am most appreciative of the thermal properties of the cast iron. This book has a lot of beautiful recipes in it. I have tried a few and so far they have turned out well in all cases. It is an idea book. It encourages some recipe modifications and variations. Cooking dinner tonight, I used two cast iron skillets. I used one to cook a dessert recipe directly from this book and I used the other to cook an entree inspired by reading this book. Both efforts were quite successful. The dessert was memorable and I will certainly make it again.

Back to the Basics

I'm going back to the basics of cooking with my cast irons. I've been use non stick pans for some time now always glancing at my cast irons as I reached for one thinking "I need to start using those again". Why did I stop using them? Because everything stuck! Not realising it was by my own fault. This lil gem of a book has helped me find and correct all the crimes I've been commiting against my cast irons.
I've watched for years growing up mom cook with cast iron, to this day she still does claiming all that new non stick stuff is bad for you(she tells me every time she sees me cook with one), not realising how to properly care for one. I've always.......cringe, used soap to clean my pans after cooking never understanding just how bad that was. Yes my mom always said no soap too.........Not all my pans came to me in good shape so it's not entirely my fault; I received a pan from my brother who thought it was "dirty" and cleaned the inside with a Brillo pad to a shine! Yikes!!! Poor, poor, pan. Lots of TLC to get that one in shape. This book has been an eye opener for me and my poor pans. I followed the seasoning steps to a T to help better season them and prevent sticking.
I love the information on the cast iron this book provides and the recipes are a bonus. Yes I bought this book mostly out of curiosity on the proper way to care for cast iron and thought if I could use the recipes then yay! The recipes are simple to follow with simple ingredients. Most ingredients you'd have in your cupboard and not have to hike across town to find. The Honey Garlic Chicken and Crispy Coconut Chicken Tenders are first on my list! It's a little of both worlds with this book, care and good eating. Thank you so much Gordon for an insightful book and happy seasonings to all ;)......the cast irons say a big thank you too!
