A Great Historical Introduction

The text narrates with detail Magellan's quest for an alternative route to the coveted Spice Islands, a journey financed by an ambitious Spanish king, and led by a famous or infamous Portuguese-born explorer Magellan. The text is appropriate for use in the classroom; its language targets fourth to sixth graders; and its content is valuable. By this, I mean that it does not give the limited information that you would find in an encyclopedia. I even remember learning about Magellan in 7th grade, and never had an idea of how brutal and violent a journey of this nature could be. Readers may also get a better idea of what long journeys in ships were like: crews having to confront scurvy (an illness that affected the teeth), possible starvation, other illnesses related to malnutrition, and (in this text) mutiny. Although a violent account (readers learn from a man's throat being slit for leading a mutiny) and of torture devices used by Magellan to control sailors, the author is careful enough in describing these in a manner appropriate for school children addressed in these texts. As I read this text, I got a strong feeling that the greed of these empires in those days had dire consequences on the people used for these expeditions.

As in Ponce De Leon, this text also uses text features, such as sidebars, illustrations, maps, photos, and text boxes that give additional information in an effective manner. It even includes a recipe of a native food, or of a food consumed by the sailors. The text is also properly organized with headings and subtitles. In addition, information about the native peoples that are part of this story is included. This is a great complementary text about the exploration age.

Informative and Fun!

For such a short book, I found it to be full of fun little bits of trivia and perfect to hold the interest of a kid. It outlined the voyage of Magellan and gave the story from more than one perspective (did the crew do the right thing or not? The answer is left ambiguous) but more than just that is touched on. For example, a single page is devoted to describing what was provided for the crew - food and such. You end the book feeling that the survival of the crew was surprising and that fact gives weight to the idea that it was a monumental task worth celebrating, despite the tragedy and savagery that surrounded the whole thing.

For a book written to elementary students, I didn't feel that the torture stories of the Spanish Inquisition and onboard Magellan's ship needed to be included. It is unfortunate because the illustrations would have been valuable for my 9 yo son's study of explorers but after he read a few pages he asked to not have to continue reading it. He found the stories too disturbing.

Kind of light on the story

I bought this to introduce my kid to reading outside of school assignments. As a 7 year old she really enjoyed it, and it took her about a day to read the whole thing. She said she really liked it, so I guess that's all that really matters. My opinion on the book is that the artwork is really well done but the story is fairly light and short. I wasn't expecting a 700 page tome, but the 60 or so pages seemed like there was a lot of room for more story.

Very cute comic book

“DreamWorks Dragons, Riders of Berk: Dragon Down” by Simon Furman et al. is a very cute comic book featuring the characters from the animated movie, “How to Train Your Dragon”. It includes an introduction of the various characters and their respective dragons as they deal with the complicated issue of shedding fiery scales, temporary ostracism and an attempted hostage-taking and raid by the Outcast Tribe. The citizens of Berk will have to work together to defend their home and its inhabitants.

This fun and nicely illustrated graphic novel gives a closer look at the vivid characters featured in the movie and allowed me to finally figure out the names attached to both the human and non-human characters. The beautiful drawings are full of action and vitality and made this a very entertaining tale that conjures up the heat and motion associated with the very disparate creatures that have allowed humans to ride them and have formed a bond with their respective riders. A tale that both children and adults with a sense of whimsy will enjoy.

The artwork in the book is amazing and detailed.It is shorter than I would have liked but that's okay.I love the comic and will definitely be getting the next volumes when they come out.

About the Author

Andres Solimano received his Ph.D in Economics from MIT and is Founder and President of the International Center for Globalization and Development. He is currently Research Associate at the Business School of Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile. He was formerly Country Director at the World Bank, Executive Director at the InterAmerican Development Bank, Regional Advisor at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Director of the Latin American School for Social Sciences (FLACSO). Poignant and Funny

When Scott Woods and his life partner, Vincent, decided to give up a Hollywood life to move to the Catskills, they had no idea what to expect. A house in serious need of work, a geriatric chicken, and one naked taxidermist awaited, along with the opportunity to make lifelong friends and a true commitment to each other.

We Hillfolk is both poignant and funny. Woods had me laughing at his city boy in the country mistakes, falling in love with his neighbors, and crying for Vincent with the difficulties he had with his parents. And, most of all, the Catskills came alive. They were practically a character on their own.

The writing is sharp and the humor is spot on. It felt more like the author was telling me a story as we met for drinks. Honestly, I don't usually read many memoirs (I'm more guns, explosions and the occasional brain-eater), but this read like a novel to me. It was funny and engaging.

As I write this review, the book is available for free with Kindle Unlimited. Take a chance on it. You'll be happy you did.

Woods in the Woods! A Fun Book!

Scott Woods really knows how to tell a story! This is an easy, fun read that puts you right into the setting of the beautiful Catskill Mountains. Scott and his partner Vincent relocate from LA to the Catskills, and buy their place in the country. But country living isn't all it seems, as Scott transports the reader through the challenges of owning and renovating an old farmhouse, raising chickens and gardens, rattlesnake encounters, country fairs, and trying to make a living as an artist and jack-of-all-trades... all interspersed with the intriguing and funny characters he encounters along the way. It's laugh-out-loud funny in many places, and thought-provoking where it needs to be. A terrific book, priced right. Buy several to hand out as gifts to friends and family!

A charming new voice

Scott Woods returned after a successful career as an illustrator in Hollywood to his hometown in rural upstate New York, with a handsome husband and a wish to lead a simple country life. He tells the story of his acclimation with a voice rich in compassion, forgiveness and humor. The characters in We Hillfolk, both human and animal, will make you laugh a lot and cry a little. Woods’ story is one part Garrison Keillor, a touch of David Sedaris, and his own fresh brand of charm.
