About the Author

Svanibor Pettan is Full Professor, Chair of the Program in Ethnomusicology at the University of Ljubljana. He is also the Secretary General of the International Council for Traditional Music and President of the Cultural and Ethnomusicological Society Folk Slovenia.

Jeff Todd Titon is Emeritus Professor of Music, Brown University, where for 27 years he directed the PhD program in ethnomusicology. He is known as a pioneer in applied ethnomusicology, and is the author or editor of seven books and numerous essays.

A story in which ability is what makes the hero.

Calumet "K" is not great literature; it is simply light popular fiction from 1901. But it is well worth reading nevertheless. Calumet "K" tells the story of how Charlie Bannon, the story's hero, attempts to complete construction of a Chicago grain elevator in the face of a series of hurdles that threaten to scuttle the project. How Bannon deals with these challenges will fill you with delight and admiration. But this story has a deeper significance. Bannon is presented as a hero because he is superbly competent. He is a man who can get things done in the face of unexpected challenges. He is also a man who loves his work. To Bannon, work is not just a job; it is a sacred calling. This exalted view of work is very rare in fiction -- the only other authors I know of who have captured it are Ayn Rand and, in some of his stories, Rudyard Kipling. Calumet "K" is worth reading for another reason: it gives a glimpse of the American sense of life of a century ago: the sense that the world is a benevolent place open to individual achievement, where competence is practical and is rewarded, and where men are free to achieve great things through their work. All of this is merely implicit; this is not a story of ideas. But the ideas it embodies are great.

Love this one-of-a kind book!

This novel reminds me of the John Wayne film, "Red River" which celebrates the kind of stubborn, fighting spirit that really won the west. This book is MUST reading for readers who are disgusted by the wimpy, wet noodle specimens of humanity that you encounter on the street every day. Don't let the crude writing technique put you off. This book is an oasis of sanity and would be a bargain at twice the price!

Great example of its genre

Calumet K is one of many books that I classify as "hero novels", books that could be termed Hortio ALger for adults.
This short book is the story of one man's adventure in building one of the largest grain elevator's in the world. If you are an engineer or interested in the history of structures in the US this is a must read.
Put this on your shelf next to "Banker and Bear", "Cash McCall", and "The Fountainhead".

Lapin continually outwits Bouki, cleverly tricking him out of his cotton crop or playing dead in order to abscond with Bouki's seafood gumbo. Colorful vocabulary ("picayunish"; "hornswoggled") and peppery idioms ("greasier than a politician's palm") season each page, along with Doucet's (Why Lapin's Ears Are Long and Other Tales from the Louisiana Bayou) robust metaphors ("And there, as far as the eye could see, stretched sweet potato vines greener than ten-dollar bills and thicker than a passel of lawyers in cahoots"). Many of these literary devices require a sophisticated audience for full appreciation, as may also be true of Cook's (With a Whoop and a Holler) illustrations, with their abstract brushstrokes, recurring salmon and saffron hues and subtle details. But those who pay close attention will be rewarded by Lapin's canny expressions and droll mannerisms (e.g., chewing a mint leaf while clutching a glass of mint julep as he lolls in his hammock). The author takes readers back to the bayou for three more stories featuring Compere Lapin, this time as he plays all his tricks on Compere Bouki. Since these two are the Cajun alter egos of Brer Rabbit and Brer Wolf, readers shouldn't be surprised to find familiar plots from African-American folklore. The tale known as "Who Nibbled up the Butter?" in Joel Harris's The Favorite Uncle Remus (Houghton, 1973), the story called "Fox Goes Hunting but Rabbit Bags the Game" from Harris's Jump!: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit (Harcourt, 1986), and the episode popularized by Janet Stevens in Tops & Bottoms (Harcourt, 1995) all turn up here. There is even a Creole variation on the tar baby and the briar-patch tradition. Cook's paintings, perhaps his most impressionistic work yet, capture all of the action and humor of the text. Although some might quibble that none of the illustrations actually depict the bayou promised in the title, those from southern Louisiana know that it's not all swamps and cypress. The glossary and author's note will be helpful for folks unfamiliar with the historical background and Cajun terminology. Even collections that already have the other versions deserve this valuable lagniappe.

The three stories in this title follow Lapin as he hoodwinks rich, dim-witted Bouki, a hyena in African folklore, who has, according to Doucet's note, morphed into "a vague dog-wolf character" in the U.S. Children will enjoy making obvious comparisons between Lapin and other familiar rascals from folklore; Brer Rabbit will come to mind particularly in the final story, a retelling of the Tar Baby tale. Filled with sly, hilarious regionalisms and spiced with bayou phrases (a glossary is included), this is a wonderful choice for enlivening folktale units. Cook's thickly brushed, impressionistic paintings in the earthy colors of a rich Cajun sauce show the stories' bluster and exaggerated action and will work well for read-alouds. This, the first effort to include in one volume all that is known regarding the arcane knowledge and occult lore of the ancient Mexican peoples and their neighbours, the Maya of Central America and Yucatan, is the result of more than thirty-five years of research in a sphere which has richly repaid the writer by the companionship of its fascination, and which he hopes will prove equally absorbing to the reader who seeks passing amusement and to the serious student.

The book is so compiled as to be useful to both, popular in its general treatment, yet sufficiently authoritative in its sources and data to be of avail either to the practical anthropologist or the student of Mysticism. The historical passages essential to the introduction of the main subject are necessarily sketchy, but embody sufficient information to permit the reader ignorant of Central American chronicles to approach the consideration of the curious knowledge of the more enlightened peoples of Isthmian America in the fields of pure Magic, Astrology, Witchcraft, Demonology and Symbolism.

The chapters on the difficult question of Mexican and Maya Astrology have been reduced to a simplicity of presentation which, it is hoped, will render this vexed subject plain to everyone, and its basic importance to the whole survey of Mexican occult knowledge has been demonstrated with an equal desire for clarity.

The author of this book, Lewis Spence, was an expert on ancient civilizations and their impact on the modern world. He wrote incredible books about Egypt, Atlantis, Britain, and more. Now, The Magic and Mysteries of Mexico is here with additional material by Dragonstar and Commander X, whose comments on recent developments with the Maya calendar and 2012 predictions, make this book a must-have for everyone interested in magic and mysticism. Lewis Spense goes into great detail on the magical beliefs of the Maya and ancient peoples of Mexico and Central America. It is amazing how beliefs in astrology, ghosts, witches, the old gods, and other magical practices are still alive and relevant today. This is a book that shows how some things never change, no matter how many centuries have passed.
