charming!

The book is charming! Lovely photography and cute little stories along with the designs. A nice variety of motifs. Overall a well done presentation of the theme, which is Christmas Ornaments! There is one basic ball pattern, and 55 patterned charts. I've been knitting similar ornaments for several years, and was about to begin adapting the same type of motifs to my pattern, but Arne & Carlos beat me to it! No sense in re-inventing the wheel.

The other reviewer is correct, there is very little technical instruction, but that is not the focus of the book. There are many well written books already in print on the subject of stranded knitting. I recommend Alice Starmore's "Fair Isle Knitting" or Ann Feitleson's book, or the Philosopher Wool book; they all have excellent technical advice.

The other reviewer is also correct that there are no patterns for anything other than the balls. I think something got lost in translation. My guess is "window dressings, centerpieces," etc was meant to describe ways to display the ornaments.

Anywho, I'm glad to add this delightful book to my collection and can't wait to start my Christmas knitting :)

Gotta knit ALL THE BALLS

This book is amazing! The patterns are well-written and easy even for a colorwork n00b like myself to understand. The the designs are gorgeous, drawing from all sorts of (presumably, I've never been there) Scandinavian traditional motifs. Plus, they include a blank template in the back of the book, so you can design your own Star Wars set and 8-bit Mario set and traditional yuletide creeping cyclopian horrors set.

And if that wasn't enough to sell you, did you see those guys on the front? They're so awesome it's painful. They've filled the book with little anecdotes about their holiday traditions and sweet suggestions like "Maybe you could hang all your reindeer balls on an antler above your table..." (Only their translated prose is infinitely better than this vapid drivel.) Hell, if it hadn't been for this book, I would never have learned either about the Christmas Pig, who gets his own spoon, or the Christmas Witch, who comes flying through on the 13th night. It's interesting, fun, AND educational.

Seriously, this book is so excellent, I've started carrying it around with me as a conversation piece. What am I knitting? Some Christmas Balls. What are Christmas Balls, you ask? Let me show you this badass book. BAM. Instant cool.

And by the way, I'm not being even remotely sarcastic about any of this. The book really is that great.

This book is easy to follow. I have made one of the Christmas balls so far and found all the directions easy to use. This is a great way to practice Fair Ilse knitting without doing a big project.

Perfect errors, past and present, are in this text

Definition. The present perfect verb tense refers to a physical or mental action or a state of being happening or existing before the present."

Hold it right there. If this definition ("before the present") does not fit the PAST tense, please tell me what does. Why go on? You have to start out right to end up right. There's no way to get there from here.
Conclusion: Disregard whatever is written herein about the present perfect.

Goodbye Notorious Flynns

Rafe, Crispin, Annabelle and their mother were the poor, scandalous Flynns until the death of their distant cousin, the Duke of Hartholm. The lack of male heirs made Rafe the new Duke and opened up a world that none of them wanted. Since then, their lives have taken a drastic turn and each sibling has had to adjust to their new station in life. Crispin however, has had the hardest time. Ever since he lost the woman he loved and watched his brother be forced to inherit a title, Crispin has fallen into a world of gambling and drinking, which lands him into a situation like his brother: Forced to marry a woman he’s never met, but in Crispin’s case, the marriage is his price to pay for a bet lost. Worse yet, his new wife is a scandalous widow with secrets of her own and a personality that tempts Crispin in the best way possible.

The widow in question, Gemma, may seem like a quiet, typical historical romance heroine but in fact, she was a breath of fresh air. Brazen and passionate, she wasn’t the usual blushing, stammering woman in need of “tutoring” in the bedroom. She enjoyed physical intimacy and knew what she wanted. In that way she was a contemporary woman and that eliminated what might have been endless pages of her worrying, blushing and fearing Crispin. Instead Gemma matched Crispin’s desire and for me it made Gemma a better character and them a better couple. I think I would have been bored to tears with one of those “innocent” ladies in this case. Crispin needed someone that he didn’t have to take so much care of, given that when the book began, he couldn’t even take care of himself. Gemma had to be the one to save him and she needed to understand him on a very basic, human level. I really liked Gemma’s subtle strength, she knew how to survive difficult situations from a young age and that gave her an outlook on life that eventually helped her reach Crispin and save him.

Crispin could be the most notorious Flynn, I’m not sure as I haven’t read Annabelle’s story yet but he’s certainly my favorite. There are so many hidden layers to this character whom others have brushed off as just another drunk gambler with money. Crispin is quite an emotional man but he keeps it all inside of him and it manifests into self destructive behavior. He was his own worst enemy and I just wanted this guy to cut himself some slack and learn that he did deserve to move on and be happy. While his moods could give a girl whiplash, it would only make a woman like Gemma determined to get to the bottom of what caused those mood swings. Crispin was the type of character that needed to be pushed until he broke because he was one stubborn male!

The Widow Wager kind of threw me for a loop though with the introduction of a character named Lord Woodley. I won’t reveal his role in the story but I will say that he wasn’t what I expected him to be. And there was a slight case of love at first sight for me when it came to him. Don’t judge, I can have as many book crushes and boyfriends as I want and I defy anyone who doesn’t at least become curious about this man *sticks tongue out* Another character that stood out for me? Gemma’s younger sister Mary. For having such small scenes in the book she sure made the most of them with her feisty personality and honest way of speaking.

I was kind of sad to see the end of this series even though I’ve only read two of the three books. The Flynns were an addictive and loyal family. I loved their devotion to one another as well as their bantering. They didn’t have a whole lot of scenes together as a family but what scenes they did have were fun. Each sibling was different, with Crispin being the most troubled, which to be honest, is the type of character I gravitate to. Gemma was refreshing with her earthy desires and compassionate nature. I think she may have been the true hero of the story. I don’t think author Jess Michaels could have picked a better woman for Crispin, nor could she have picked anyone one other than Crispin to close out the series.

Final Verdict: So sad to say goodbye to the Flynns, rowdy, unconventional bunch that they are, but there were some secondary characters that have some promise. I can't wait for the next book by this author!

Fun Sexy Wager in Love

Oh. My. Goodness. This was such a good, intense, sexy story. I absolutely loved it. And, just saying, the cover is beautiful – I’m a cover collector and that cover is amazing.

Crispin is a wreck. A totally drunken, womanizer, gambling wreck. I can feel badly for Crispin, but would really rather just smack him upside his head. He needs help, and Gemma is just the one to give it to him.

Gemma is a widow… or was until Crispin lost at cards to her father and he had to pay up. Marriage. To her. Gemma’s first husband was older than she and his insistence at getting an heir from her resulted in his death. Dead. In bed. In the middle… well, you get the idea. Now there are rumors running about that she helped him over the edge of death by killing him. Which, technically might be close to the truth. Unfortunately, her first husband’s death put her right back under her father’s control. Once again to be sold off or gambled off.

Crispin has no idea of what he lost at cards last night. He woke up with a raging hangover and a redhead in his bed. A beautiful red haired lady – how the hell did that happen? Oh, nevermind, he’d find out soon enough.

Gemma and Crispin are sizzling hot together. If anyone can help this man turn his life around, it’s Gemma. While they share an amazing sexual connection, neither wants the messiness of falling in love. Throughout The Widow Wager, they begin to know each other, even trust each other a bit. There will be trials, gossip, tribulations and danger before they work their way to each other in the truest sense. But it is a journey well worth taking.

This novel is an amazing addition to The Notorious Flynns series. Now I’m ready for the next one. Love this series.

oh my!, the Flynns are at it again!
OK, so Crispin Flynn is a drinker ... HEAVY drinker. And one morning, he wakes up to ... wait for it .... a wife in his bed! No recollection. Nothing. Nada. Zip. I love a good historical humor with a side of sexy fun and Jess Michaels delivers EVERY time! By far, this is the sexiest Flynn story. You see, Gemma, Crispin's now wife, has a bit of a kinky~kink side! So yes, when they DO finally come together, it's HoooooOOOOOt! LOL OK, so the story goes like this. Crispin is drinking and playing cards with guess who? Yup, Gemma's daddy. And he does not win (or does he? lol) The wager .... he's got to marry his daughter, THAT NIGHT. He's 10 sheets to the wind, so Gemma has to repeat this entire story to the man the next morning. WELL, Crispin isn't having any of this so he decides that going to his brother for help is the only solution. Well, THAT didn't work because they LOVED Gemma!Hmmmmmm, so I guess Crispin is just gonna have to make lemonade out of these lemons he's bought for himself! (lol) And he does, and it's a sweet and tart lemonade. They both have secrets and pasts they must share to overcome and move past. Gemma is a little more forthcoming than Crispin is but in the end, he comes around!
There's a whole lot of HOTNESS in-between that I refuse to tell you because it is THE BEST PART OF THE BOOK!
#TRUESTORY kids, The Notorious Flynns did not get that name for nothing! Go forth and enjoy yourself a little kinky historical!

Wonderful gift for yourself and all Brautigan fans.

It is truly unique to have an opportunity to look into the eyes and the soul of a cherished American writer. Erik Weber has given us that chance in this book, “Seeing Richard.” These photos go far beyond the posed, back of the jacket portraits and give us a sense of the author’s fuller life. And as an extra bonus, Weber shares anecdotes of his time and close relationship with Brautigan, chronicling much of the time of his success. Even if you have not read any of his novels, this this book is a wonderful introduction and a starting point for a wonderful journey.

This is a really special book if you are a Brautigan fan. Much has been written about Richard Brautigan's life but this book felt more like sharing experiences of life with him, as if I were in the crowd or the park with him, seeing his candid facial expressions and his unposed reactions to surrounding events. You see both the man and the myth as Richard walked that line in his own life. The very detailed tour through his apartment is extra special and has never been seen before, unless you knew him well when he lived there, which the photographer did. A conversational text accompanies the interesting and beautiful photographs, and includes photos of other writers such as Tom McGuane, and Jim Harrison as they were also starting out, like a 70's literary brat pack in Montana. This book chronicles photographically the rise and fall of a career, and the beginning and end of a long friendship. I loved the visual and emotional dimensions this book provides, and if you are curious about or already a fan of Richard Brautigan this should be among your possessions.

Insightful and inspiring

I found out about this book through TWiP (photography podcast) and immediately wanted to check it out. I was unsure about the purchase but it's been worth every penny. I'm not a street photographer in particular as I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and I find it hard to really focus on this kind of photography in a place like this where not too many things happen.
This book has given a whole new perspective on street photography, with a whole interview with a street photographer based out of a small town in Oregon. If you are like me, and live in a moderately to sparsely populated area, this book is for you: it will encourage you to pursue street photography in a different but no less exciting way.
The Essentials of Street Photography will also teach you about technique, equipment, etc. It will not go out recommending expensive gear or anything, so that's also a big plus for those in a budget.
And last, but not least; I had a technical concern about the book before purchasing so I decided to contact the photographer. To my surprise, he responded very promptly and has been beyond helpful. His availability and involvement are outstanding. Very thankful for that.
Great and easy read. Will not disappoint.

A worthwhile street photography primer

Street photography is worth doing well, and any budding new street photographer will learn a great deal from reading James Maher's book, The Essentials of Street Photography. As with many things, there is no substitute for actually getting out there, pounding the pavement, and snapping your shutter. This book is full of great tips, and it's helpful to hear that someone else has gone through many of the same worries, experiences and triumphs that a beginning street photographer will go through. Even if you're not interested in being a street photographer yourself, the book provides an insightful examination of the practice of street photography. I enjoyed many of the book's meaty, urban photos. My personal favorite is "Banana" on p. 36.

The Streets Are Ours!

So many photography books, so many approaches to so many subjects. Why buy this one? Well I have a number of photography books having started with 'Dummies' and then drowned in a sea of prescriptive 'How To's'.

Once you've gained a reasonable grasp of the technical aspects of your subject the quest for inspiration can begin. I have Sontag's 'On Photography' to tell me why and 'The Genius of Photography' to tell me who and when.

To transform theory into practice it helps to be inspired by a current practitioner. It's easy to be intimidated by the quality of a body of work like James Maher's but Maher's approach is so inclusive and generous that it pulls you in.

I have taken a number of street shots (mostly abroad as I feel more comfortably conspicuous as a stranger in a strange land, acting strangely...) and just occasionally I've been pleased with the results! But it is of course important to gain a sense of affirmation that you're on the right track. The Essentials of Street Photography provides just that and has inspired me not only to revisit my existing work but to get back out on the street and seek new challenges with a renewed sense of purpose and legitimacy.

The Churchill Mk IV was an evolution of the Mk III in which the principal difference was the cast turret, replacing the welded one on the Mk III. The armament was either a 6-pounder or a 75mm gun. Together with the Mk III, the Churchill Mk IV was present in most actions in Italy and North West Europe and with the Mk III it was the mainstay for most Churchill tank-equipped regiments after 1942.

Not quite the total technical reference that it could have been

I was a bit disappointed in the lack of completeness. I had expected a very (VERY!) detailed depiction of all of those technical internal areas of the Churchill that are not covered in other, more general and historical references.

Coverage of the interior is limited to mostly stowage diagrams (printed many times in other references). I had hoped to find much greater detailed information of the interior, to include not just the driving and fighting compartments, but also the engine and gearbox compartments. I also expected to find thorough coverage of the Churchill's hull when stripped of all of its components, but again, this was not provided.

The author also includes an entire, very superficial, chapter on Churchill "Funny's" which provide no new information for the serious student. This entire chapter would have been better off omitted with the space then used for additional photographic coverage of the interior spaces of the restored tanks.

In the end, I was able to piece together most (but not all) of the specific information I was seeking (and expecting to find). This is not the complete technical reference that I expected based on the title and the reputation of Haynes other manuals.

It is useful, but it could have been much more so with more technical content and less general history (already amply covered in many other references).

Another Pleasant Surprise From Haynes

Haynes' Workshop Manual series has always been a bit hit-or-miss - the good ones are really good, the average ones are really average. This recent entry on the British Churchill tank of World War II isn't perfect, but it more than met my expectations in most regards. Combining a healthy mix of technical, operational, and historical details with numerous "in action" photographs and detailed technical diagrams, reading this "manual" from cover-to-cover is a bit like visiting a little museum devoted to this famous infantry tank. As with the other Haynes books, the highlight is the technical diagrams, ranging from cross-sections of different types of ammunition, to wiring diagrams, views of the interior layout, stowage diagrams, and views of each lubricating point.

Written by a man currently restoring three Churchills to working order, and produced in cooperation with The Tank Museum in Bovington, UK, there's a little bit of everything in here for serious and casual tank buffs. There's a whole chapter devoted to Churchill restoration, descriptions of the different variants, intimate photos of a Churchill crew between actions, side-panels on various pieces of tank equipment and famous Churchill units, and even a fairly lengthy lecture from 1944 by Lt. Col. E.V. Strickland on Churchill tactics.

However, with all this information crammed into 160 pages, the book comes up a little short in places. I couldn't find, for example, any detailed information on the thickness of armor employed on different parts of the tank, or how much ground pressure the different variants exerted. The system diagrams are nicely detailed, but the book lacks an overall cutaway view of the tank (there's one on the cover, but it isn't labeled, nor is it very detailed) to put everything in perspective. Finally, the chapter on Hobart's "Funnies" and other specialized modifications is a little lacking in detail.

I still highly recommend this book for fans of World War II vehicles, but a few more pages would have let it breathe a little bit and easily make it a 5-star title.

About the Author
Susan Andreatta is a past president of the Society for Applied Anthropology. Her theoretical background lies in political economy and political ecology as applied to the environment and health. As an applied anthropologist, Andreatta conducts field research in the areas of tourism, migration, resettlement, health and nutrition, sustainable farming and fishing, and the marketing of fresh local produce and seafood.

Gary Ferraro is an applied anthropologist who conducted research for extended periods of time in Kenya and Swaziland. He has served as a consultant/cross-cultural trainer for large organizations (USAID, the Peace Corps, the World Bank) and large international corporations such as IBM and G.E. Plastics. He currently works with businesses to help them cope with cultural differences at home and abroad.
