Unfamiliar terms are effortlessly explained. The large, full-color photographs sometimes fill an entire page and show individuals engaged in daily activities. There are also a couple of maps (without a scale or compass rose). Batten gently explains that there are many reasons for studying other cultures. Her respect for the work of Hurtado is evident as is her concern for the future of the Ach‚. Reluctant older readers will be enticed by the photos. MARVELLOUS INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY

This biography of the young Venezuelan anthropologist Magdalena Hurtado provides a very clear description of her fieldwork among one of the world's last foraging peoples, the Ache indians of Paraguay. This beautifully illustated book provides the best available introduction for young readers of what it is an anthropologist does. Although the publishers recommend the book for ages 9-12, my guess is that students in junior high and high school --perhaps especially young women -- will find the book both informative and inspirational.

Great book for kids and adults

I gave this book to my 3 yr old neice and 6 yr old nephew, and they were as fascinated by it as their mother and father were. The pictures are wonderful and the text really gives you the feel of what the lives of one of the last groups of hunter gatherers in the world are like. And it paints a detailed and fascinating picture of what it is like to be an anthropologist studying and loving a people whose lives are so different from our own. A really enjoyable book.

Lucid and Able Survey of Philosophy

Do not interpret the "Made Simple" part of the title to mean "over-simplified" or "simplistic." This book is a lucid and able survey of philosophy at an intermediate level. The seven sections cover ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, the theory of knowledge, logic, and contemporary philosophy. (The only major topic missing is esthetics.) In doing philosophy one is engaging in a serious, long-range conversation with past and present thinkers in an attempt to understand ourselves and the nature of the world in which we live. With this book as a foundation, one could go on to read advanced texts in philosophy and the technical literature. For instance, one could study Samuel Alexander's magnum opus Space, Time, and Deity, and not get lost in the thickets of thought. I highly recommend Philosophy Made Simple as a sturdy foundation for building your own philosophy.

Philosophy Made Dull

In college a long time ago my nascent interest in philosophy was temporarily dimmed by a dull text. But it was positively sprightly compared to this book.
The authors take an historical approach. If by "Simple" you expect "Introductory" then historical is not the right approach in any subject. (You wouldn't, for example, plow through all of Euclid's Geometry before learning decimal digits.) The result, for example, is that the second chapter deals with Politics. While important, political questions are hardly the most gripping that philosophy has to offer.
Even as an introductory course in the history of philosophy, I can envisage a much better book than this one. It does have fine bibliographies at the end of each chapter, and would form a decent review book. There are a few amusing anecdotes, such as the one concerning a philosopher who testified about an auto accident.
The last couple of chapters are better than the earlier ones would lead you to expect. The penultimate chapter deals mainly with deductive logic, and actually has exercises with answers. (If you enjoy this material, you will probably enjoy the more leisurely and thorough coverage given in "The Trivium" by Sister Miriam Joseph.) It also reviews fallacious reasoning. If you're going to read this book, read this chapter first (the authors seldom let the dullness from one chapter darken any other discussion, so you can read the chapters in almost any order), and perhaps you will be sufficiently armed to spot the fallacies that led, for example, Hume to conclusions he himself regarded as absurd. The final chapter deals with modern trends, which possibly interest the authors more than classical philosophy.
Philosophy can change your life. This dry tome is unlikely to. Never trust philosophers whose grasp of Latin permits them the misspelling "ad nauseum"!

Isabelle is a treasure.

A friend. Someone who is working to make a difference in the wine world. A huge contributor to the understanding of Natural Wines through her RAW Faires in London.

And the author of this lovely book.

She starts by sharing an epiphany.

While viewing the manicured landscape from her friend’s house in Cornwall one weekend, she realized that the perfect picture was truly an image of agricultural decline, not pristine beauty. An example of the destructive effects of monoculture to the natural health of the land. And our food and wine as well.

Her book is a rallying cry to the core benefits agricultural biodiversity. A dive into the science of the soil and a straight on debunking of a series of myths around the use of sulfur, cultured yeast and additives in wine making.

It drew me in from the start.

You may not agree with it all. You will absolutely learn a great deal about agriculture and winemaking.

You will also be bowled over by her passion for the topic and her huge heart for the natural winemakers who are changing our view of what constitutes a great wine in today’s world.

And I promise you will be thankful for the section of the book with descriptions of over 100 recommended natural wines to track down and drink.

This is a thorough handbook covering pertinent information in gynecology and obstetrics that is designed to be carried in the pocket and to point-of-care settings.�The purpose is to provide a quick and easily accessible manual for obstetrics and gynecology issues. It is not designed for directed reading, although many chapters do a very thorough job of covering the material. The online format is nice and I appreciate that it is linked to Inkling, although the code redemption required using a different site.�The intended audience is medical students and residents, although other care providers may appreciate the book. It is unique in that it depends on a lot of residents for input, which is a nice feature as it allows input from those who would benefit the most. The other authors are all credible authorities.�This is a handy pocket book for the field. It is designed to be used in a triage setting or for quick location of information. Chapters such as the one on alloimmunization and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy give a concise description of the pathophysiology followed by clinical management. In fact, all chapters are heavily geared toward clinical management. More flow charts would be appreciated. The treatment section for UTIs and STIs are well done and the easy access to medication doses is appreciated. This book functions as a more comprehensive version of the "red book" -- a pocket book designed for quick 5-minute digestions.�This is a simple, straightforward, and well done pocket reference. The online features are nice and this will serve medical students well during their introduction to the field.
