About the Author
Ren Hurst is a former horse trainer and hoof care specialist. After several major shifts in perspective, she left Texas and the professional world of horses to start a sanctuary in far Northern California based on everything she had learned from the equines in her life. She is now the director of Sanctuary13 and a co-founder of the New World Sanctuary Foundation in southern Oregon. This is her first book.

Seek truth. Be love. Have courage.

Ren's memoir allows the reader to experience her courage as she shares the truths she's learned along her journey with horses and in her life that led to the ultimate discovery...true, unconditional love. Although many may think this book is solely about her growth and changes with horses, she has given us a brave insight into her personal life and the many lessons that she's learned along the way that have shifted her belief system and way of being. Her fearlessness in continuously questioning tradition both in the horse industry as well as the real world is inspiring and helpful to those of us that haven't had the nerve to vocalize these feelings of confusion within ourselves. This book is for anyone that is ready to step outside of their comfort zone, experience some growing pains, and begin living in harmony with every being in the world.

A woman who is changing the world

Riding on the Power of Others is a true love story set in this real world. Ren generously has written a memoir of her life growing up in an American culture and peering through the distortions to discover the love that is behind all of our relationships. I recommend this book to any person who is open to exploring new perspectives in our relations with animals, humans, and our natural world. I am honored to call Ren a friend and I see clearly that she is committed to living her truth and using what she has experienced to create sanctuary not only for horses but for humans who are willing to work together to create a kind, compassionate world.

How horses show us who we really are

Riding on the Power of Others is a spiritual coming-of-age memoir (mostly) that is clear, vulnerable, insightful. Hurst is unapologetically truthful about what her relationship with horses showed her about herself, how she changed it, and why it matters for the rest of us. There are scenes in the book that will have anyone who has ever had a horse, wanted a horse, loved a horse, or loved the IDEA of a horse on the verge of tears. Those tears are the watershed of compassion, and she’s got it in spades, along with the courage to show us how horses show us who we really are. If you're ready to ride on your own power, pick up this book.
