About the Author
Robert Harley is the editor in chief of the Absolute Sound and the editor of the large-format book series the Absolute Sound’s Illustrated History of High-End Audio. Founded in 1973, the Absolute Sound is the world’s most respected magazine on high-performance audio. Harley has taught college degree programs in audio engineering in addition to having worked as a recording engineer, a CD mastering engineer, and an audio journalist. He has published more than 1,200 product reviews and articles on high-quality music reproduction, and he is the author of Home Theater for Everyone and Introductory Guide to High-Performance Audio Systems. His books have sold more than a quarter of a million copies in five languages. He lives in Carlsbad, California.

Robert Harley is controversial. He is carrying the mantle of Harry Pearson and J. Gordon Holt and is a leading exponent of the subjective school of hifi journalism. For those who believe that subjective evaluation is the only legitimate approach, this book has a lot to offer. For those who believe that measurements and objective criteria for evaluation have a place, this book will disappoint. For those of us who think that a blend of both are valuable for evaluation, this book is worthwhile. The book is well written and Harley is well schooled in his subject. While not afraid of controversy, he is also not afraid to advise his readers to use their own ears and form their own impressions of all things audio. The book is meant to be a reference rather than be read cover to cover. Chapters are broken up in a logical manner to facilitate the use of the book on an on-going basis. There is enough new material to make the latest edition (4th) worth buying for those who have the 3rd edition.

GREAT SOUND STARTS WITH CURIOSITY!

A real Handbook- Something to come back to again and again. Lots of Tweaks and years of Knowledge shared to reveal the most music from your own equipment. Ie only scratched the surface, but already I am using info on digital file types, downloads and digital servers, things I wish I'd started out with. Invaluable for fledgling Audiophiles, gives you the foundation to make wise purchases, and getting the most from your audio reproduction. For people who view music listening as a distraction, this book will show how rewarding actual CRITICAL LISTENING can be, and it all starts with curiosity. Great Value- Highly Recommended !

Where's the index?

This should receive 5 stars for its content; it is a valuable update of a classic. The 1 star is for the Kindle edition's inexcusable omission of the detailed index that appears in the print edition. (It is actually shown in the table of contents...grayed out!) This is a reference book that covers a huge amount of material; a carefully-compiled index is critical to its use, as Mr. Harley is obviously aware since he went to the trouble of compiling one. And no, doing a word search does not replace the need for a carefully curated index. Had I known (there is no way to tell from Amazon's product page), I would have gone with the print edition. As it is, my index-less Kindle copy greatly diminishes the usefulness of a wonderful reference book.
