The third adventure in the visceral female gladiatortrilogy that began with Gladiatrix—Lysandra is back, and she's going to war!
In the dirt of the Flavian Amphitheatre, known to history as the Coliseum, lies the bloodied body of Spartan priestess Lysandra—cut down by Rome's adored Gladiatrix Prima, the beautiful and deadly Illeana, the Midnight Falcon. At the edge of the underworld, the goddess Athene offers Lysandra's spirit a stark choice: reside eternally amid the fields of Elysium, or return to a life thatisfull of pain and sorrow—but will secure Lysandra a glorious place in legend for generations to come. Meanwhile, the legions prepare to embark for the Dacian frontier as the Emperor Domitian seeks revenge for Rome's worst defeat for almost a century. With them is the former tribune Gaius Minervius Valerian, anxious to wipe away the disgrace of being the sole survivor of his own command, annihilated by a swarm of savage warrior horsewomen. And now it seems that Lysandra's destiny also lies to the east, as well asthe prospect of a final and bloody reckoning with an old and hated adversary.

A cracking good story, worth the read
By Panzergrenadier
But since I am a Panzergrenadier, I have issues with it. In the Author's Note, Whitfield as that modern women should be admitted into the combat arms "once they prove they are capable of it". This hardly squares with the hard-won realization of his two top-tier Gladatrices (p. 455) that they were not cut out for high-intensity combat: "There is a reason that men fight and women nurture", nor with the fact that the bad guys routinely raped wounded or captured women soldiers. Then there are his tactics. In open country infantry cannot conduct a delay against a large body of cavalry. The first principle of war is concentration of mass at the decisive place and time: you don't send half of your force forward to get defeated in detail. The only reason the Dacians get delayed is because the Spartans conducted a night raid against a Dacian camp that had only local security but was not dug-in. The Roman fort gets overrun in short order. A well-organized fort would have had bastions on each flank providing artillery and arrow flanking fire across the curtain wall. These bastions would also have protected the ramps leading to the ground, so that if the Dacians made it to the wall-walk they would have had nowhere to go and still be under flanking fire. A good fort has a fall-back position behind the curtain wall - it could be something as simple as wagons tuned on their sides, to allow a delay by bounds back to the redoubt, instead of the sauve qui peut that took place here. The Romans didn't deserve to win this one.

Get all three books and have fun!
By DrP
First of all, get all three book. They are all different in their own way, but they connect the story and should be read together to fully enjoy this awesome trilogy. The adventures of the Gladiatrix Lysandra and the various folks weaving in and out of her life are definitely worth your time. I loved each book, at times for the same reasons - the characters are well developed - there is humor and sadness and violence and love - and the pacing is excellent. But as I said, each story builds on a different time of Lysandra's journey. Imperatrix, I have to admit, was my favorite of the three. That is saying a lot considering I would give the other two books a hearty 5 stars as well. But Lysandra's march off to war and the encounters and adventures that ensued were just flat out brilliantly entertaining. I sat in a park during my lunch time and finished the last 75 pages and I am sure people walking past thought I was nuts as I sat there and cried, and laughed, and cried some more, and then cheered, and cried and so on... but that's what great books do, isn't it?? The author does a good job of being historically accurate AND writing fantastically entertaining fiction. He states where he deviates from the historical record, but that really wasn't a big deal to me at all. I just wanted to have fun reading a great book, and he delivered, all three times.
